Based on what I've seen so far, this will probably be the bike for me. I currently own an '07 F800ST but have found it's just too much bike for an old guy like me who likes to drive leisurely along and venture off into the dirt roads and occasional light trail.

The 800 is too high and I don't need the off-road capability so am thinking the new gen F650GS will fit the bill with it's lowered frame. I nearly traded the ST for a 2007 650 but the single cylinder held me back.

Any news on when this will be available in the US?

I saw it posted on another thread in this section. If you do a search I'm sure you will find it.

It's actually looking as thought it wont be coming here. It's been cleared by the Kaliforniya Emissions people, but nothing from BMW on it.

Id guess no at this point...

Can someone tell me BMW's thinking behind giving this street-oriented version less power and lesser brakes than its off-road-oriented sibling, the F800GS? I would have thought it would be the reverse.

I suppose one should just think of the F658 as a more powerful version of the original F650. I was hoping, though, for a smaller and lighter version of the 1200GS, but with 85hp and dual disc brakes, etc.

A contract worker for BMW at the International Motorcycle Show in Seattle said the F650/F658 was a design exercise and will not be built. Let's hope that is not the case.

he clearly has no idea what he is talking about , my local dealer here in scotland is showing the bike on march 8 next year , along with all the other uk BMW bike dealers . the bike is also listed on the BMW international web site . here in the UK, it will sell for £5495.00 . i think the confusion stems from the fact that the bike is not set for a release in the united states next year . maybe you will get it in 2009 ?

I swear, everytime someone mentions one of these geeks, I get fired up.

They are putzes - simple as that. I would trust internet gossip more than I would trust them... and thats saying alot.

And to think, I paid $11 for the privilege. In consolation, saw the F800GS but unfortunately forgot to bring the ladder so was unable to give it a test sit. Speaking of tall singles, the KTM 690 Duke is a looker.

This must have been the F800GS "holder" at the Seattle show after the sidestand failed...

Motorcycle Consumer News just reported that the F650GS was coming to the US in '08. Perhaps it will be like the carburated models: they'll sell the remainder in the US market while introducing the next generation elsewhere, as was done in 2000.

I believe they are in error - the new F650GS (we should probably take to calling it something else, such as the F658) won't be coming here just yet. Probably next year. They'll probably be focused on selling the remaining F650's ... if any are left by now. [:D]

I was talking to my dealer today and I just learn that the new F650GS will not be available in the US. The US wants to promote the G series. Let me know if someone heard otherwise. It's availeble in CANADA.[:)] My Gilfriends bike was ordered today.

My dealer says there are no '07 F650GS left in the US at dealers. He said they had a very limited production and US distribution this year. I sort of believe him since I wanted to buy one (I already have an '02) and there would be little reason for him not to go find one to sell me, since I passed on the current models for now. He said he couldn't even find one on the dealership network. Too bad, I am one of the few who thinks the single is superb for its purpose and I've gotten spoiled with 70 mpg on the highway. Hope the new F658 is as good as it looks. My rumor mill (and that's all it is), says they will be here in 2009, but who really knows.

I am another 'older' guy with a 2007 F800ST that loves the bike but thinks it's a bit too tall for him... I love the bike, but I've been giving the new F650GS a lot of consideration.

Don't misinterpret this - I love the F800ST. It has everything I need/want-and I got all the 'toys' on mine, but I feel like it's too tall for me (5'10", 30" inseam). I'm going in Saturday to look at the lowered seat to see if it helps. If it does, I'm a happy camper.

My dealer in Milwaukee told me last month that there were no F650GS' to be found and that I would have to wait until the new ones come out. I didn't think to ask about the details (I just assumed that it would be the F658). Now you guys have me wondering...I hope the 'F658' is coming this year - otherwise why would they let the pipeline dry up?

Latest info I've heard is June production with late July / early August dealer arrival ... if the boat doesn't run aground. :D
