View Full Version : Automatic subscribe system, no thanks

I know you're well intentioned, and I thank you for your time end efforts, but the automatic subscribe thing is not a good idea, as far as I'm concerned, and it is badly implemented. Now, if I fail to «unsuscribe» from a topic every time I post, my e-mail box is flooded with notices of replies. Very irritating. The problem is that unsuscribing once from a topic is not enough. You have to do it every single time you post on the topic, or even every time you edit one of your posts, because you find yoursef re-subscribed every time. Is there a way to correct this? Unsuscribing once and for all should be enough.

Thanks.

Looks like another example of the old saying, "You get what you pay for."

What do you mean by that, Roadpizza?

I mean this should have been a PM to Rob to see if you could work it out with him. http://youtube.com/watch?v=GdaM8mxEBtY

Hammam I think the current set up of this forum is the right one, if you post in a topic surely you must be interested in new replies to that topic? So I think the auto-subscribe thing is a good thing for most of the users.

I think making a 'don't ever subscribe to this topic' button would be quite complex. If Rob is able to maybe he could make a scratch box in the 'profile' page where one can select NEVER to subscribe to a tread for those who dislike the current system. Filtering out all messages to a certain address before sending the messages a new posting to a topic has occurred will probably not take as much effort and system resources.

I whole-heartedly agree with Hammam; all these e-mails are a complete pain.
If you want to know what new replies have been posted since you last logged on, all you have to do is click on 'Active Topics' at the top, then make that your entry page in your browser Favourites.

Please, Rob, a rethink! (But still very grateful for all the work you do.)

d100kb, Greyerbeard sums it all.

Roadpizza, I still fail to see the relationship between «you get what you pay for» and a PM to Rob. However, I think a PM to Rob would have missed the opportunity to see how many people feel the same, or don't. So far, we're two of us, our of four posters. That's half the population :D

I agree with Hammam. It's a Royal PIA. For the record I posted that to Rob PRIVATELY last week. But since it's evolved into a public issue I'll go on record before God and the International community. It's "effin" annoying. Now I have to click "send" and then unsubscribe to this forum. See ya L8r.

PS Had a great 200-mile ride yesterday on my very fast blue F800ST. The temperature started out at 29 degrees Fahrenheit and never got to 40F. Gerbing jacket and gloves made it work, although, with the Moto-light on and the electrics pumping I had a hard start when I stopped for gas.

I agree it's a pain. I just sent in some bucks as a "supporting member" got the tee shirt, stickers, the whole 9 yards. I encourage that. Love the forum, and will donate again whenever my "supporting member" dues are up or whatever.
But for the record, it was a tad annoying at least until I figured out the "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" functions.
If we're taking a vote, I say allow the initial subscription to be chosen, not automatic. it is a nice feature to follow certain threads by e-mail, but should be reader's choice UNLESS it's far too complex and too much work for the admin. to do it that way. it's enough that Rob gives us the forum, and would MUCH rather have that in exchange for a few keystrokes
thanks

Agree with Mike completely. I just sent in my subscription as well, not to have more say in the «subscribe» debate, mind you, but because I appreciate this forum as well. But, please, give us the choice to «subscribe» or do nothing. Thanks.

Now, I must remember to «unsubscribe». Posting and contributing shouldn't become a chore. [clap]

I can see the principle behind the automatic subscribe but also the drag having so many e-mails flooding in.
What I have with some other forums is a digest option.
This collects up all the e-mails and sends them as one e-mail each day. That e-mail has a summary of the info all the separate e-mails would have had.
That way you can scan down and see what traffic there has been all in one e-mail.
Other than that I think the system should remember if you deselect to subscribe to a topic and lock it like that even if you post again.

Moan, moan, moan - why don't you create a gmail address then your regular inbox won't get cluttered.

Pat H

What would be the point of that?
Either to ignore them (and any valid e-mails sent to you from the forum) or wade through them in isolation?
I can use rules in outlook to sort them out and file them. But better yet just make it work better.

I don't look at the emails that come through, just delete them all. I haven't figured out how to manage them yet and I preferred not seeing them.

So now to find the unsubscribe button.

According to PatH I can manage things through outlook. That's all news to me. I'm less computer literate than more.

I also saw this thread in the logon page. But couldn't find it elsewhere. Looked in general and then finally logged out and back to find it again.

Aside from that we're heading into summer and right now it's about the bike and the road not the bike and the computer.

Okay, I see how it works. I can handle unsubscribing each time. I never bothered subscribing previously. I could always find what i wanted.

So now for the posts that i've been in that I want to unsubscribe from do i have to post in each to unsubscribe?

Help!

Mystic

Since we now automatically subscribe to posts shouldn't we have an unsubscribe clicking thing below the topic?

Thanks for the changes Rob. So you got the posting page. I was talking about the page you read from before posting. There is a subscribe at the bottom of that page. I guess that needs to stay for those that choose to subscribe but not post. So I guess I have some housekeeping to do to get rid of the emails.

Thanks - Des.

I agree that the default should be to NOT subscribe, then allow users to subscribe to threads as they desire.

Well, if you use the quick reply box, you unfortunately dont have an option 'not' to subscribe.

If you use the regular reply box, there is an option box underneath where you type your message that you can uncheck to not subscribe to the topic.

If there is enough backlash to the setup, I'll turn it off though...

Yes, please turn off the 'subscribe by default' setting. Users should have the ability to subscribe when they want, but it should not be set on by default. It's a pain if you quick reply or forget to turn it off...

I just want to make sure that you know that you can 'opt out' of subscriptions by unchecking the box as notated in the post above. You can also un-subscribe yourself from any topic / forum / the entire board by going here:

http://f800riders.org/forum/subscription_list.asp

This is *identical* to how the subscription method on nearly all VBulletin boards work (ADVRider, etc...)

Thank you for your interest, Rob, and for pointing to the «Subscribe» check box right under the reply box. But, again, I think it should work the other way around, and not be checked automatically.

As for the link you provide, unless I'm missing something, it just links back to the usual all forums page.

The link takes me to my subscriptions list page.
Would be nice to be able to check all the items you want to unsubscribe from then click unsubscribe on mass as doing each one, one at a time with the yes no confirmation and then the close window, for somebody prolific like me :D was a right pain.

I've gone ahead and changed it back to what it used to be. No more automatic subscriptions.

7 maybe 8 out of 1855 members is not exactly a landslide vote to expound on the virtues of the Democratic process. It is more like the squeaky wheel getting greased.Originally posted by greyerbeard
