Hello,
I met a fellow today with an ST who had removed the big mudflap on his bike. Now the backend looks more like an S.
It looks like its easy to remove (and replace later if one wants to).
If anyone else has removed the ST mudflap, can you please post the directions?

Looks like its as simple as removing 3 screws; 1 below the plate and 2 that screw into the main plate holder, but I'm not sure if the main plate holder needs to be removed first to allow access to the large ST mudflap.

If you know, please do tell...
Thanks in advance!

3 screws thats all.
Remove the number plate and the centre two scews in the photo and the dirt will go everywhere.

I removed mine and it doesn't seem to create much of a problem with dirt. However, it hardly rains here in So. Cal. so I could see it being an issue for people that ride in the rain frequently.

First I remove it, then realized it was too dirty, so what I did was cutting the mudflap where it has a V shaped just below the plate. So now it's between extremes, not that dirty, not that ugly long....

The previous owner removed it, and the rear of my bike is FILTHY. I'll be putting it back on.

My dealer mechanic took mine off to install the side case supports. It is 3 screws. He didn't want to put it back on because it looked so good. All I did was remember when I drove my "S" through the rain the first time and my back got soaked, so I told him put it back. It's about a 5 minute job.

Or what ever the "official" name is...................................

Did you leave it on or take it off? (The big black plastic one behind the licence plate bracket).

yeah really simple, i took mine off when i pulled it in the driveway, as well as the F800ST stickers as well, so its just all grey, a real looker to those around. The water does fly up, i see the dirt on the luggage rack afterwards, but it doesnt seem to matter.

I left mine on as I don't mind the look of it, it stops the crap being thrown up the back and it gave me somewhere to stick the Michelin Man sticker.

The ST read mudguard is really huge, but looking at all the nooks and crannies that would be exposed without it, I decided to compromise and trim it at the indentation below the licence plate. There was a long thread about this some time ago.

My dealer takes them off of all of the F800s before sale. I didn't even get one.

(probably resells them for $379.00 to people who ask about them)

I would have really like to have had one for the rainy season to keep the fine sand that the rear wheel kicks up from finding its way into everything.

Don't know about the US market, but in Canada the 'S' has no mudguard, the 'ST' comes with one. Since I commute and ride regardless of the weather, (except the depths of the Canadian winter) and don't like the looks of the massive mudguard, I compromised and trimmed it at the notch below the licence plate.

My dealer did this for me when I picked the bike up.

Quote - My dealer takes them off of all of the F800s before sale.

The F800s models are not supplied with the 'mudguard' in the UK, only the ST versions.
One of the reasons for the S being cheaper.
Because my F800 is an S converted to an ST the 'mudguard' was an extra.

Had the dealer take mine off before I took the bike.

Asthetics before functionality. :-) (It's a Harley thing) :-)

I had the dealer take it off on my ST before delivery, thinking it looked much better without it. However, he handed it over to me (luckely!!) so I put it in the garage.

When I bought the Softbag Sport, I installed the mud guard, as it really messes up the bagage rack if you don't.

It's a five minute job to install, so come summer, I my decide to take it off again and make the ST look slightly sportier.

Thought it looked very odd till I bought the side bags.

Looks fine with the bags, dorky w/out.

I'm gonna leave mine on...but may trim it a bit.

You know, I have a saying: If it ain't broke, why fix it. Designers have take a lot of time to style the bike, why change it???

Skidmarx (or somebody) needs to make an aftermarket replacement so that we don't cut our hands off.

I can't cut straight on my practise attempts.

Because it looks daft?
Why ride around looking daft when you can ride around looking cool.
And changing our bikes is what many bikers love and 3rd party companies make a good living out of.

I must admit I ride a F800ST and got the S Bars for mine when not touring, it does look good. But one get "too much" customizing also, not?
