Is it just me or do they seem to be getting worse? My daily ride takes me through Islington into Soho.
Islington council have a reputation for the worst potholes but this is getting crazy. Watch out if your travelling along Essex Road in Islington about 4 deep cratersin both directions that can cause serious damage to rider and machine.
Also on Rosebury Avenune where they seem to have done resurfacing works that have created one hole about 10cm deep.

In Ireland we have perfected the pothole , we surround the pothole with gravel just incase you manage to avoid the hole itself.

There's one I catch on my way in once in a blue moon and it makes my fillings rattle.
If you have the time send the council a letter with the location of any you know that you consider a danger and mention that.
Won't get them done any quicker but it does mean that if you hit one and get injured or even worse the bike damaged you can prove you had informed them. Puts you in a very strong position if you need to claim, all for the cost of a letter.

Hahaha!

There's a particularly impressive crater on the outside lane of the elevated section of the Westway out of London. Right in the middle of the lane taking up a good quater of it just as the second Shepherds bush slip road ends.

That wakes you up!!

why is it that sometimes, you see a wet grid / pothole and you seem to be drawn to it like a moth to a light bulb, competely unable to avoid it. Is it just me?

See my other post somewhere on ending up where ever you are looking.
Same as on an unexpectedly sharp bend (not that any of us would ever be caught out going into a bend faster than we should)
We instinctively look at where we predict we will lose it and crash out of the bend. And invariably that is just what happens.
If however you force yourself to look at the exit point and concentrate on that there's more chance you body will subconsiously try and achieve it. Or so various experts have told me.

So maybe with holes in the road yur better ignoring them and concentraing on the known good bits of the road.
How that works in practice is another thing altogether.

On one of my early CBR's Almost new I was driving near Brent Cross and reached up to re-position my chin strap.
The car in front passed over a house brick in the road and I saw it emerge just in front of me. Didn't have a chance to move and hit it square on at 50MPH with one hand on the bars.
I did have time to brace and caught the other bar just as it started to whip out.
Scary moment. No damage to the bike or wheel. Fillings justed needed tightening!

What Pat H says.
One way to practice not hitting potholes etc is to try and miss the cats-eyes when overtaking or filtering. The trick is to look at the gap and not the cats-eye. [clap]Look at the cats-eye and you will sure as hell hit it.[cry]
