Ok this has come up before but I thought it would be interesting to discuss filtering tips and techniques. So....

When you get up in the morning what filter coffee paper works best to give.......

No seriously I had a hell of a journey home tonight. Took 1.5 hrs instead of the normal hour or less. Lorry broken down in tottenham one way system. World came to a standstill.

Anyway during the ride home there where plenty of opertunities to practice my survival skills while filtering.

Avoiding the car drivers that decided to change lane without indicating and looking. But then being on a mobile I guess it's tricky.

I discovered a new way to get through those gaps with a mirror from each car in the way. In the past I either waited till one car or the other moved to let me though. Or a wiggle of the handlebars to get through. Or if brave lean to one side and go through at an angle.
But my new trick... Race upto the mirrors at the last minute grap the front brake and hold it on while keeping the power on.
The front drops and you can duck under. Now couldn't do that with my Honda anti-dive:D

Who else has filtering tricks or techiques to share?

Yeh - instead of grabbing a handful of front brake, try pulling the clutch a little further back, spin up to around 4000 rpm then drop the clutch - regulate the height with power as the front wheel comes up and you'll sail over those wing mirrors a treat. If you get good at it you can keep the front up for a line of traffic, using careful adjustments on the power to go under the van mirrors. Folk tend to get out of the way more often, too.[ride]

Take it easy out there!

Problem with that is you lose the ability to see in the mirrors and can mis those damn scooters and bicycle that try and sneek past.

I prefer the Swan Slim Filter Tips, oh and avoid the muppets pulling out from the left (how my Hornet bit the dust)

I used to have a BMW R80 with a full fairing added on. The bike was silver and I wore black leathers + white Arai full face helmet.
I suspect many motorists confused me with a police rider when they saw me in their mirrors as lots of them moved out of my way.
Never had a problem filtering on that bike[ride].

My yellow CBR had the same effect.
If you were lucky a bow wave effect developed with driver parting as you filtered. By the time you got level and they realised you weren't the police it was too late. really speeded up the fltering.
Doesn't work on the F800. (yellow S may have more luck) I suspect the headlamp look is wrong.

Hi Pat,

Doesn't work with the F800? Oh I don't know, try some white paint and a touch of the old battenburg, you might be surprised!;)

I'm finding more and more that because builders, council workers, everyone and his dog seem to be wearing reflective jackets (even in their cars - what's that about?) that you may as well not bother.
Some car drivers even seem to react like a red rag to a bull. Just assume you're completely invisible at all times and that'll be somewhere near the truth[ohno][ohno]

I personally know two police motorcyclists who've been knocked off their police bikes by cars pulling out in front of them - the mind boggles!

install a nee naa siren and stick a blue light on yer lid.
That WILL do the trick.

One of those two policemen was responding to a call, with blue lights and siren going...the car driver 'didn't see him'.
