100MPG?!?!?! They must be saying what the computer reads when they are going down hill with a tailwind. There is no way the bike could actually get 100mpg on a full tank.
Liked the article -- because according to MCN it seems I made a good choice I ordered mine in February after sitting two times on it in a bike show, without opportunity for a test ride. Still need to wait at least for a month to get it here.
You know...the changes in suspension, power, and overall refinement are some things I'd trade up for.
The chain, however, is another matter entirely. That will take some convincing.
However, as much as I love the S...take an F800R, install the S fairing and my current handlebars/topclamp, traditional BMW turn signal switches, and I think I could make myself live with the chain.
Thought I should add here as I keep a close eye on economy. Using universal 'm's & UK 'g's, my 2008 F800ST typically does 52mpg on short journeys in heavy traffic from a cold engine (making MCN's comment of '50mpg without trying' quite reasonable). Cold engine/short journey/heavy traffic is about as 'worst case' as I think it can get. 'Progressive' riding I get around 65mpg, tedious long journeys (typically sitting at 75-80mph) it goes up to around 80mpg. A very careful 50mph in 6th does appear to give around 95mpg, but it happens rarely enough (and not for very far) for me to be able to substantiate it as I get there by removing the other miles at a better known mpg from the total fuel quantity & giving that number. Which isn't a very reliable method. But - interestingly - does seem to match the computer's guesswork fairly well, as do the other numbers...
Conversions: 1 UK gallon appears to be 1.2 US gallons, so in US units that would mean I get 43mpg in town, 54mpg when being a nut, 67mpg on long journeys & 79mpg when trying really hard to be economical. Which seems to match up with avboden pretty well.
My GS gets 199 miles per gallon on the computer - but that is going downhill with the throttle closed. When I open the throttle, the mileage drops substantially. My guess is that MCN had the computer toggled to the wrong setting on the computer display. Maybe they didn't read the owner's manual.
I asked my dealer when it was coming & he replied that it would not be coming here, nor would the K1300R, as the price point would be too high to compete in this market.
Getting the K13R??? We've had it for months, along with the 1300S.
2010 should be interesting for Canada. Near the end of 09 Honda has confirmed it is releasing a NEW 600cc 4cyl model (not confirmed if its the Hornet) as an intermediate bike, for those looking to step up from the companys cbr125.
BMW would be crazy NOT to offer the R as it will likely be in a similar market.
We're supposed to be getting the R in '10. Not fully confirmed yet.
If anyone's interested, another review of the F800R has just popped up here.
