BMW noticed that my gas tank is cracking and faulty and will be replacing it. Not sure how I missed seeing that!! Apparently the 800's have done this too for a while, so this is a familiar issue the dealer was looking for.
Placed a warranty order for the replacement (1500 bucks apparently! ouch!) and will swap it out in a few weeks. Said I can still ride in the mean time.
They also replaced my clutch cable which they said stretched way too much in a short time.
Everything else looked fine. Took her for a ride after the appointment! Glad I have what appears to be a thorough local dealer!
Odd how BMW can have fuel tank problems after so may years of production. I liked the early 800 that had a pinched line and tank inflated and the tire wore a hole in the tank. Brilliant engineering![lol]
I sure hope they do fix the problem permanently over the next few years while I am under warranty!!! Both sides of my tank have begun seperating now. They say its not a big problem and mostly cosmetic on the outside surface. I will shoot a picture this after and post up for others to see so they can watch for it. Curious how often this really does happen as I haven't seem much complaint on this forum.... (Yet).
Ouch, that stinks! I love the warranty. A friend was looking at a 990 Adventure last week, are you guys aware a KTM warranty lasts 6 months? Thats freaking pitiful!
Yes, admitted it's not the best picture in the world for showing the problem. The crack in fact appears on the edge as it goes from vertical to horizontal. Best way of thinking about it is to imagine a straight piece of plastic that you've physically bent over something to change it's shape. As it bends, it puts strain on the edge and this may be a contributory factor in why it cracks. It should be added though that not all owners are suffering from this problem as the survey indicates so it may well have been just a bad batch. Oh, and to be precise - it's not the actual tank that is cracking as that's inside, it is in fact just the outer decorative panel. Cosmetic damage only but a PITA for those that have suffered with this problem.
Fuel tanks still cracking after 5 years of problems?
Stretched clutch cable after 600kms?
Proof positive that Motorrad is certainly interested in marketing a high quality product which will generate more traffic in dealerships as soon as it leaves the showroom floor.
My new tank goes on next week so I'll report back on how it holds up! Both sides of my original are now cracked pretty good similar to the picture Alan posted.
Mine cracked too on an F700GS. Just one year old and 3900 miles. Just go to https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ and it takes just 2 minutes to fill out the form to file a complaint with the NHTSA. This will get the ball rolling toward a real solution from BMW if NHTSA gets wind of this. I have filed mine regarding the gas tank, but seriously there should be hundreds of entries as 1/2 of the owners in various surveys report having replaced the gas tank at least once. When I looked at the complaints there were only a handful. Take the 2 minutes and file a complaint....once the numbers rack up we will be taken seriously.
Tanks cracking is not unique to BMW. My first generation Ducati Multistrada had a similar problem. At first Ducati, USA denied that there was a problem. However, a class action suit, finally made them replace the tanks. My local Ducati dealer checked my tank during the 12,000 miles service, took pictures, and sent them to Ducati. A new tank which was installed at no cost to me. At least BMW appears to have addressed the tank issue.[]
