New Farkle! BMW Comfort Seat

When I was in the dealership the other day for my service, they had the new BMW Comfort seat installed in a F800GS. Looks really nice and has a nice deep pocket for sitting, narrow at front so I can still touch the floor and a huge seat pan for sitting while riding.

Looks great with the two tone colour, I installed it on my F650GS and tried it out, I'm sold... just have to save the cash, it's EXPENSIVE!

Found the part number from another forum:

"It's called a Dual Seat and the part number is 77 34 7 724 099"

No idea about the Dual Seat, I was told it was the Comfort Seat. It has a higher spot for the pillion as well, so they are about 2" or so higher than the rider and a bit of a slope back to prevent them from sliding forward.

Either way, me likely. This is the FIRST fancy seat that still fits shorties like me!

Looks interesting... but, I'd still lean towards an after market seat maker. If BMW can make a comfortable seat, it should be the standard seat. I don't want to encourage them by buying their expensive optional seat!

Until some moto-journalist of high profile repute suffers from some form of seat induced ass crack agony, it isn't likely they will offer that seat as anything more than an option. That most certainly is a shame.

If that's correct, its compareable to other aftermarket seats. Still, too bad they didn't make it the standard seat, or at least a no cost option at purchase like the low seat. I'd gladly have let them keep the original torture plank that came with mine. It's just taking up space in my attic now that I have the Sargent.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I'm sure they really "manufactured" their own aftermarket seat. Just as the hyper priced BMW System helmets are essentially rebadged Schuberths.

Can't blame them for making extra bucks. Business is business.

I walked into my local dealer here in California and was quoted $500 for the comfort seat. I checked max BMW and saw it for $442. I am in the market for a more comfortable seat and now that BMW has their own seat it makes me wonder if my choice of going with Sargent is the best. I can't see neither seats in person so my only option is to order and try them.

Sargent does have a 30 day return policy....
So, try that one first, if you don't like it you can send it back and then start fumbling around again ...

Sargent certainly does have a 30 day return policy, I will make use of it if necessary. Hopefully I will fall in love with it at first use, it looks so much better than the BMW comfort seat. I hear some complains over the extended reach to the handle bars, if the seat is comfortable enough and that is my case an 80 dollar riser will fix it.

In defense of BMW, if they offered that seat as standard, you would be seeing a lot of bitching from guys who ride off road regularly. I guess the ideal situation would be to have a choice at time of purchase. Just add to the high or low seat option.

WOW, After reading many posts on all the different seat I have decided to go to a local shop and have the stock seat modified. For $150 or less it will be made for my butt.

I think this two toned BMW seat looks great...and totally agree that at the time of purchase...BMW really should offer an upgrade seat as an option. For folks like us who will be off the tar a very small percentage of the time...would love to see an more comfortable seat at the time of purchase as an option. That way BMW could make it more affordable. I am going to have a chat with my dealer about this seat because we get 15% off. It does look like the Sargent I was going to buy but by Thor's review...narrow front is good...keeping feet down is even better....I am now very curious about this two toned seat!

I haven't heard any real reviews from people who have this seat. Ergo's look good but how is it after a few hours and a few hundred miles? I'm not short, but I have never met a stock seat I liked. I anticipate going with a corbin, sleeker than the couch on their website though...

Had a Corbin on my Harley...really liked it after the 2000KM break in period...really heavey seat though and made well...what Corbin seat is there other then the one on their site for the 650?

Its the same model but with out the sofa look. I stole these from some forum somewhere, but if I order the corbin I will send these pictures to work from, and ensure they give the seat a nose job. I have a corbin on my springer now, and had one on my vulcan before that. Loved them both.

Right now I have nothing but other riders reviews and comments along my own experience on the corbins I have owned. Lot of post I have read had high hopes for that Sargent, but reading further many ended up returning them or later looking for other alternatives.

The corbin was a supple? rock for a seat, but I never tired while riding with it and it always felt the same from the first minute I sat in it until I got off the bike. Not a plush couch, but both the seats I had were all day comfort for 10hour + riding.

I saw the corbin seat and my first thought was - no way could I put that love seat on the GS. My only concern now is that I know some of the corbin models are crap - don't put one on a sporty, type crap. So I hope that the seat experience I had on my two other bikes translates to the GS.

When I ordered my Corbin I spoke to a guy named JR from the factory in Florida I believe it was. He was helpful and an honest guy to deal with....I would not hesitate to get his take on a Corbin going on a GS....I might even have them add a bit more back support...

did you have Corbin customize it for you? if so what model seat is your Corbin and if you don't me asking how much?

Funny, I can't find where I got these from. I have them saved on my hard drive as 'DaveCorbinSeat'. Did you have anything special done for it, its obviously not the corbin F800GS 'poster' seat from their website. Can you tell me a little about it, materials ect. I am fairly certain that when I order I will send these pictures to see if they can pretty much duplicate it.

yes i had this done at corbin while i waited and had lunch at their cafe'.... i had them cut down the transition from rider to passenger and chose not to have the "recliner" style stitching (they tried to fight this decision) which meant they had to stitch a seam across the butt rest area, i don't see a problem with this but they were reluctant. i also had them narrow the nose area where your inner thigh rests when feet are down (stop light, etc.) i am 5'9" and when wearing a slightly tight pair of jeans -

no jokes please- i could not touch both feet to the ground - now it's fine!

i got a sale price for coming in on 4th of july (they had a big open house thing) it was about $375 i think....

it is made of leather in the rider area and synth leather on the rest i used the "carbon fiber look" on all of it and had them do the corbin logo in yellow to match the bike.

I had my seat custom made by Corbin. Extra low with an extremely minimized scoop, so mobility is retained. It means unintentional forward/backwards movement happens more often and there's less support on the upper cheeks (and therefore less comfort), but I've done 400+ miles days with it and if you stand up once in a while to give your butt a rest, you can ride all day no problem. Besides, it's nice to stretch the legs anyways.

Actually, I said, "if BMW can make a comfortable seat, it should be the standard seat." And I stand by that. With your initial logic, dual sports need uncomfortable seats to maintain mobility... but, because many of the F800GS riders on this forum, who I'm sure use the bike for its intended purpose, have opted for a more comfortable seat, I think that's a flawed hypothesis. You even acknowledge that your more comfortable Corbin maintains mobility. So why can't BMW offer that as a standard?

I'm also not sure I've heard anyone on this site say they "LIKE" the stock seat. Sure, some people say the seat is good enough, or that they can tolerate it, or even that they can live with the pain (I'm usually in this boat), but has anyone actually said that they liked it? Maybe I missed that post...

My guess is that BMW wants to hit a certain price point with the bike, and improving the seat probably makes it harder to do that. Rather than increase the bike's MSRP, or skimp in another area on the bike, they choose to offer a 2x4 as the seat. Fine by me. But, if I ever upgrade the seat, it sure won't be with a BMW product.

I have both the standard BMW and the Corbin Canyon DS seats. No question that the Corbin feels much more comfortable with my butt on it. 5 foot 10.25 inches height, 30.5 inch inseam.

As for the Corbin's looks, I've had more people compliment me on not only getting a comfortable seat, but a nice looking one as well. I have not received any comments on the standard BMW seat.

Well they are either really busy or don't do emails very well. Sergio got back to me today about the Corbin Seat.
Here is what he said:

"Basically you want the seat to be a gunfighter seat. The rear passenger pod is removed and the seating area for the passanger is trimmed down and slightly tapered. Definately gives the bike a cleaner look. This particualr order will need to be called in."

His email is 'Sergio at corbin dot com' and he is at least familiar with the pictures.

My first ever ride on a BMW was in 1979 when I rode pillion on an R75/5. It was the most comfortable seat I'd ever sat on and that, with some other features I really liked, was the first time I thought I would like to own a BMW.

That said, my previous bike was an R1150RT, and to be honest I don't find the GS seat any less comfortable than that was.

Can anyone tell me if the Comfort seat has any dished area in the passenger portion ? From the photos it appears to be flat.

After reading this thread, here's just an idea to ponder, I took the low seat that came with my '10 model to a local upholsterer (can't spell that), to have him modify it to my specs. I haven't many miles on the bike (approximately 450), but realized that sometimes I needed to move rearward and the "lowered" section of the seat wouldn't let me. I had him take the cover off and we marked the areas that I wanted to change; when he first gave it back to me, he had added some foam to the lowered part and it ended up with a "crown" to it that didn't feel right just sitting on it, so I had him flatten out the crowned section leaving a slight depression in it, and after riding about 50 miles today, I think I really like it. I haven't ridden with one of the aftermarket seats, but for the $60.00 it cost to modify the stock seat, I think I'll be happy with the change. K.

My seat had been modified like that by the previous owner...it isn't bad compared to the stock seat, which pushes me toward the tank uncomfortably...I find myself sitting on the rear edge of the dished out area, so I may have a go at carving it back an inch or so more and maybe add some higher density foam to that area...

My sore bum has requsted some relief..after concidering the DIY hack approach and some serious thought/research I've put the DIY/hack job approach on hold(as a plan B)....i've read I think every damn review of every damn option out there...I'm going to give the over priced($589+shipping) WUNDERLICH COMFORT ERGO LOW SEAT a shot....I will leave some detailed info once my bum has done its full review of this over priced farkle....i will try to be prompt...i know alot of your asses are begging for relief too..

do you have anyone near you that can customize your own seat? i got a local gal who happens to be quite good to trim the foam and add a gel pad....nice job for $250.
