Has the gas tank on your F650GS/F800GS twin cracked?

What I can't figure out is that I have owned about 10 Japanese motorcycles with sealed tanks and canisters (thanks to me living in California who came up with the big idea in the first place) and have never had a venting or swelled tank problem. Why would it be that only BMW motorcycles seem to have a problem with charcoal canisters and sealed and cracking tanks when this has never been a problem for the Japanese? Do the Japanese know something that Germans don't, or are the Germans just trying to make the system different that what has been shown to work on other brands?

Another interesting observation, is that the Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki tank venting systems seem to be much more complicated than the BMW system, with various devices located between the tank and the canister that control the venting. I know this for a fact, as I have had to remove a lot of this junk in order to adjust the valve lash on my motorcycles. [:(]

Zero cracking problems with my new tank since doing my cannisterectomy two weeks ago. I've put about 250 miles on the bike since then including parking the bike out in the hot Texas sun while I was in a few restaurants (Om nom nom nom).

I put another hose on that white connector cap and ran it down by the shifter. I should probably just go buy some more 5/16" hose instead of how it's set up now with two connectors in the line, but it works.

Every time I honk the horn instead of indicating a left turn, flash my left blinker in fury at the car that cut me off, or get whiplash from throttle twitching when attempting to cancel a lane change signal with my right thumb in a super awkward position, I dwell on this question...[lol]

So guys, does this only seem to be effecting the GS series of F800's? Have there ever been any reported problems with the S or ST tanks?

Very weird.

We had rumors of a 2nd re-design ... that was perhaps being quietly introduced as stock ran out of the 1st redesign...
Has anybody got a follow up on that topic?
My warranty runs out in early Sept. and I'd like to get the best tank possible prior to warranty expiration! [8)]

Plastic tanks

It is not uncommon in plastic tanks esp if HDPE for them to be made of two types of HDPE, linear for the chemical resistance and cross linked for strength, not uncommon to use a linear inner and crosslinked outer that are supposed to be molded somehat as one pice but it is not uncommon for them to separate due to slightly differing coefficients of expansion and just the difficulties molding. Have seen this on big HDPE tanks and the debate how to do it best lingers on. Not sure if this BMWs issue or not but could be and of course as suggested seems to me if no venting that could certainly be a big factor.

Lars:
I don't know that it would or would not cause it, but if the liner is in "intamant" contact with the shell, and I suspect it is then the forces would be (could be [?] ) transmitted to the shell. While 5 psi is not a lot of pressure the surface area is large. I never hear the UK guys talking about this, so am suspicious.
I have posted a pointer over there to this poll.

Also worth noting that forever Ducatis coolant expansion tank, also made of HDPE routinely cracked at a seam, very common. HDPE tanks that seem to be in a hot environment, like on a bike just seem to be problems esp if the molding has some design issue, meaning seams that could be weak, thin, etc. I wonder if tank is linear HDPE which has a tendency to split along a line thus the linear concept. With my warranty about up, I took my bike by the local dealership to get started on the tank replacement.
There is a new (new to me) P/N posted to the catalog: 16117704799
I don't know if the 799 is the second or the third iteration, but I am thinking it is the 3rd...
The dealer has submitted a PUMA request on it to get the replacement of the tank authorized....

2011 Cracked Tank

2011 F800GS with 240 miles total; cracked tank already. WTF?

Bob in AZ

Noticed a few weeks ago, my second tank (first one replaced for cracking) also has cracks and I really think worse so on this one. Annoying.

Amy: Do you have the paperwork that would indicate the P/N of your replacement tank?
I hear the 16117704799 is "all new and improved and stuff" [lol]

Cracked Tank

Yes. US Bike with canister. Once. BMW has ordered part from Germany. They will cover the cost but only when customer requests the replacement. No recall coverage.

I had my dealer order me a new replacement tank (this will be replacement number 3!) I told them I did not want a replacement that had the old part number but wanted the new part number (16117704799) tank only. The new tank came in, I dropped by to inspect it and sure enough the tag on the bubble wrap packing had the NEW part number. However when I removed the bubble wrap and inspected the tank itself it had the old 798 part number molded into its surface. My dealer has filed a follow up PUMA to find out if this was an old tank mistakenly packed as a new one of if the NEW tank is somehow different in the interior (the liner) but uses the molds of the old 798 tank for the exterior shell. I will let you know what they find out.

Paco:
Well that's not good news ... [xx(]
Where on the tank is the P/N molded? Can the P/N be seen with the tank installed....
I am now worried that I may have a "new-old" tank???
