Solomoto30.com is reporting that BMW is prepping an update to the entire R1200xx series in the not so distant future. Apologies for the poor (edited) Google translation, but here is what they are saying:

Quote:
The fact is that the boxer engine will be the main protagonist of the updated catalog of best-selling models from BMW, which will have a reduction of weight and minimal increase in maximum horsepower or torque.
Quote:
The future R 1250 GS have dual ignition, dual spark plugs in each cylinder head, a detail that the boxer BMW models have had when they were 1150 and again when a spark plug per cylinder became in 1200.
Quote:
However, it can be said that the R 1250 GS does not come alone. We are told the Naked R 1200 R will probably receive the new improved engine at the same time, while the R 1200 RT and R 1200 GS Adventure would be to get the change in late 2010 ... the latest promotions that are benefiting the RT however might point to an imminent change of model for this fall.

Why do they have to keep increasing cubic capacity? I'd love a lighter and more compact version (as much as I like my R1200R).

I would like to see a derate HP2S DOHC engine in the RT sans the 30k major service that includes pistons and rings for starters on the HP2 Sport. no one really knows if this will really be required on the street driven HP2S, however. It is a very smooth running air-cooled engine. Don't know how it will fair with the ever tightening noise standards.

I think the reason that BMW keeps increasing the engine capacity of each new model is partly due to the need to compensate for stricter emission standards and partly (or mostly) due to the need to identify the new model as one that is worth more money than the previous model of the same bike. Anyone want to bet that the new R1250 bikes will not be at least a couple of thousand dollars (or whatever currency that you have) more than the R1200 bikes?
