If you have S1000RR Questions, they have answers. I'm looking for questions to forward over to BMW North America's Lawrence Kuykendall regarding the S1000RR. The cutoff for receiving your questions is Monday @ Noon EST. Here is what I have so far:
  • What is the total production of the motorcycle, and what portion of that is going to be imported into the US?
  • Is there a sticker kit that is going to be available to make the headlights 'match'?
  • What is the plan regarding factory racing sponsorships for the motorcycle? (both AG and NA)
    • Should we expect to see the bike in WSBK next year?
    • Should we expect to see the bike in BSBK next year?
    • Should we expect to see the bike in AMA Superbike next year?
  • Is there going to to be a racing contingency program for privateers?
  • What are the future plans regarding 'out of the box' marketing for the motorcycle? Are there going to be any BMW branded track days or something similar?
  • Is the S1000RR a CAN BUS bike?
  • How does the introduction of the S1000RR impact the HP2 Sport?
  • Is there an HP version of the S1000RR planned?
  • Will a kit be available to flip the shift pattern of the motorcycle? (i.e. 1 up, 5 down)
  • With the introductory price so low on the S1000RR, there are discussions of quality standards being lower, or BMW losing money on each bike. Comments on this?
That's about all that I have. Remember - these questions will be addressed by US staff. Questions regarding the motorcycle that are specific to motorcycle in other markets can't be answered.

Here are the questions that Laurence and I have been discussing,

1) Will it be possible to turn off the 186 MPH top speed limiter as we plan to run the S1000RR on the Bonneville Salt Flats next summer.

2)
Will full race ECU programing be available to those of us that plan to race the S1000RR

3)What, if any, continguency programs will be available. As you might know......"what wins on Sunday, sells on Monday".....or something like that.

+1 on the race ECU option, to go along with a full race exhaust. Some of us will race it, others...simply will run non-street legal kit on the streets

Oh, and will a WSBK-spec under fairing (full length, to use with race exhaust and conforming to WSBK rules (can catch and hold oil if spilled from the engine), be available from someone?

The accessories being offered do look very nice, but for me, I would want to upgrade the suspension first and foremore. At the moment the accessories being offered do not include suspension upgrades. I would be interested to know what the officially blessed BMW upgrade path for the suspension is.

Rumor has it that the 46mm forks are meant to be easy to upgrade to Ohlins. Can Laurence confirm or deny this? Which Ohlins forks in particular are they thinking about if this is true? Does the stock triple clamp that permit fitment of the FGR 900? If not, will there be an accessory to do so? What about a TTX40 for the rear?

I imagine the top-shelf Ohlins should bolt right on; the bike was designed around the WSBK suspension components.

from everything i've heard form the rep's the stock suspension is actually quite good and you wouldn't notice a difference going to ohlins unless you were very..very good.

When are we going to see actual dyno numbers?
Will BMW ever offer heated handlegrips?

I very much doubt it. If it is the case that FGR900 and TTX40 are bolt on replacements without new triple clamps, etc., then this would be the only sport bike that has that feature and would make it very much attractive, but it would be highly unlikely given what I have experienced.

All the WSBK race machines that I've seen pictured have FGR900s on the and to my knowledge, not a single bike on the market can fit those with the OEM supplied triple clamps.

+1 Simon. No way the fine tuning you get with race quality Ohlins is going to be the same as showroom shocks.

My suggestion for BMW is that the next time they update their bikes' computer program they include a battery voltage tester that checks the voltage of the battery when the starter is used to help determine the condition of the battery. When the battery starts to look weak, the instrument panel could inform the rider that the battery will need to be replaced. That would be really helpful considering that none of the current BMW motorcycles will run if the battery voltage drops below a certain level. I hate pushing a motorcycle!

I suggest that Bmw start tracking the unbelievable number of fuel strip failures on the R1200RT. My '08 is about to have the 4th one installed. When I called the customer service number they had never heard of the problem. Customer service needs to be able to start a tech fault.

Ohlins, I thought it was just a name and a way to milk you out of exobitant amounts of cash, but my experience was night and day - 848 with basic suspension, 1198S with Ohlins. I simply could not believe how much easier it was to get the bike to do things that were one step ahead of my abilities. I had to work and fight the 848 a bit; the 1198S was telepathic, and I felt like an instant race god

visit alpharacing.com the guys in germany are the racing team BMW in SBK and factory sponsored for S1000 racing parts on sale via BMW dealers. In Castelloli wich I was the manager of Alpha told us that the bike in dyno runs stock at 186 hp and full racing kit at230 hp.and believe me the racing kit has many things.and you can also send your bike to their headquarters and send it back fully ready at your specs.Cheap and cool mod was that they sell a Bitubo cartrige for the Sachs fork.

Factory sliders for trackday prep?

Other trackday prep instructions from factory: e.g. lights defeat via CANBUS switch sequence for US-spec motorcycle, radiator flush, tail piece removal, turn signal removal?

These bikes should see a lot of trackday time, so why not address the necessary bike preparations in orgranized fashion?

This might be a bit too technical, but getting a better understanding of DTC and wheelie control.

Is the bike using a 3-axis gyro to keep it from elevating the front wheel past a certain angle? Or, is it simply using the wheel speed sensors. The marketing docs are a bit unclear on this.

Coincidently I was told by Budds BMW here in Oakville, Ontario, Canada that 170 units were imported for this market. Guess that leaves 830 for the rest of the markets to fight over.

There were 690 pre-sales in the US. I don't think production was limited to just 1000 motorcycles.

My dealer, who had just returned from the US introduction, told me that there would be 2300 S1000RR bikes imported into the US this year. At least that is what I think I heard. Perhaps one or the other of us was confused and it was 2300 units produced for all markets in 2010. I am sure that I heard "2300", though.

Yeah, I heard initial production units was somewhere around 2,000 to US (or North America) and then BMW bumped it up to 2,400. I have to imagine that based on the price point of it not being a exclusive bike, that if BMW sells all the units, it will bump up production. Anyone know how many CBR1000RR Honda produced last year?

I was having problems with my BMW and good thing there is a forum that would really help out. Hence, it might still help to visit the nearest BMW service center so that your car would be diagnosed.
