So here's the current prices from Revzilla a few minutes ago. No rebates yet.
While the Metzeler Roadtec 01 has gone down in cost since last summer, I won't ever be buying another. The first one I bought, lasted 6000 miles. Judging by the wear, I'll get only 6000 miles out of this one. On the other hand, the OEM Metzeler Z8 was changed out at 11,000 miles because I was going on a road trip. And the Dunlop and Continental tires have worn about the same.
The Owner Rating column is interesting. The Michelin Road 5 is highly favored by many as the tire to get. But when you look at the owner rating, it is in the middle of the pack. When you look at the cost, it is the highest...and went up from last summer. Supply and demand.
I'll go for the Dunlop RS 3 or Conti RA 3 next time around. Both were great tires, and with rebates next spring, should be some of the least expensive tires.
That's a wonderful assortment of trips, including Siberia. Probably best you've got that scheduled for July. What takes you there? A desire for hard labour?
Also, +1 for the level of organization you bring to the new riding season!
Siberia will be interesting. I've been volunteering in prisons now for 18 years. Most of that has been local. But several years ago, I started going overseas too. This will be my sixth international mission trip. The group's focus is to bring the Gospel message into the prisons, and to train local volunteers to continue after we leave. The reception we get, is an eye-opener. We've had virtually every prison official ask for prayer, even in Muslim countries. On one of the last trips the group went on, the president of the country asked for prayer. In a country where almost 2000 Christians have been killed in the past year. The reception we get, is totally different than you'll find in the USA.
As for the organization... I have to. In June, I think I'll be home for about five days. If that's when I do my tire change, I'd better have the tires delivered already to make it all work.
Revzilla's price is $353 delivered. They do charge sales tax though. Not sure if you were charged sales tax, or not.
When the rebates start again...and judging by what they were last year, both the Dunlop and the Continental tires will come down to about $260. That's almost a third off the price of the PR5s...and the tires are rated by owners as just as good.
Like you, I started changing my own tires. It's not as easy as an oil change, but it really isn't hard. Technique is important though.
The reception you describe is remarkable given what we think we know about foreign places. Thank you for sharing.
Yours is a great lesson for those who don't or won't travel beyond their borders or a mini-America resort town in Mexico. The world is a big place and North America is a pretty small part of it.
I have been running the Dunlop RS3s on the F8 for a bit and really like them. I have since put one on the rear of my GSX S1000. Much more powerful bike but doing well in 1-2K miles I have accumulated on them on the SUZ too.
Hi Chris; I've run the Bridgestone's on the Vee-Strom that I had and was very pleased with them. I recently put a set of Michelin Road 5's on my F800 GT and they seem great as well. Glad your doing a lot of riding with the Northwest COG. I rode for some 20 years with them prior to moving to Arizona. I look forward to meeting you at the COG National as I will be up in the Puget Sound Basin during the summer and plan on attending the National. Good riding!
Cool! I hope we meet. I'll be the guy with a white F800GT in the midst of all the Kawasakis.
I got started with them and the ST-Owners group a couple years ago now. Both groups are great riders who know what they are doing and think nothing of crossing several states to meet up. And at the end of the day, they like to party and get to know each other. I put their rides on the calendar months in advance to make sure I don't miss them.
