Heading out to Eastern Oregon this weekend with my buddy Doug. He bought my '12 GS and we plan to explore the Blue Mountains, Anthony Lakes, Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, and Helll's Canyon along the Snake River in NE Oregon.

Speaking of Eastern Oregon: I will be attending the Chief Joseph rally in John Day, Oregon, at the end of this month. Eastern Oregon is a great place to ride. Nice roads, beautiful scenery, friendly people, lots of interesting history and little traffic - not too many gas stations, though.

Good reason to get a bike with a 5+ gallon gas tank is the absence of fuel in rural areas.
I got gas in Denio and we found that in Fields the place claimed to have a more secure fuel supply than Denio.
Chief Joseph is a nice rally. One sure find some out there countryside getting there and back.

Anyone happen to notice that just about every new motorcycle model introduced this year has a smaller gas tank than the previous version? If this isn't being done for styling, I bet it is being done to reduce the advertised "curb weight", now that motorcycles are becoming heavier due to continuing new Euro-eccentric motorcycle regulations.

Four days and 1400 miles of rambling the back roads of NE Oregon and SE Washington. Nice trip with my buddy Doug who had his first motorbiking/camping excursion. A bit of wildlife on the road, and a few RV's to contend with, but this area is remote and very little traffic. If you get a chance to visit the Eagle Cap Wilderness area and Wallowa Mountains, go for it. Even better by bike. Yes, gas stations, and towns for that matter are distances apart. But, we had no trouble. Doug's GS holds 4.7 gal., my GSA 7.9 gal. We stopped pre-emptively several times. In the remote areas of the west, I follow the well worn adage of "never pass up an opportunity to get fuel".

Anthony Lakes. We camped here at +7000 ft. It was good to have a fire. We woke up to 31° F and descended 2500 ft. in 10 miles. Gained 20° as well.

Hell's Canyon looking east into Idaho. This is on a paved road between Halfway and Joseph, OR.
