It’s just me, but I’ve never understood the appeal of any R NineT model. My eyes fixate on the huge gas tank, which reminds me of a beluga whale. I think the bike looks cartoonish and completely out of proportion.

It's not just you. My first reaction to this thread was  . (I do appreciate Richard230 digging up all these articles though. :) )

Nothing about the bike appeals to me. It is a design that customers voted to eliminate decades ago with their pocketbooks.

My 2 cents worth,.
The R 18 doesn't work for me, the exhaust pipes look like they should be on a 1940's hotrod,,.

On the other hand I could go for a couple of the R9T versions,. Perhaps the Scrambler or the Urban GS as a extra bike in the stable and could be fun,. I'm thinking the racer versions are not really rideable other then departing and arriving for coffee which perhaps is the intent,,.

Further more,,,, BMW has been busy,,. What with the extra 50cc's on there entire line along with the twin cam tech,,. I don't think anyone else has been quite as busy these past couple of years,,,!!

Could be, but I don’t think someone loyal to Harley would consider switching to BMW just for a R18, just as I don’t think someone loyal to BMW would consider switching to Harley just for a Road King. There’s too much invested ego and self-identity in decisions like this, especially among long-time riders who’ve been loyal to one brand. It’s too tribal. Just like Ford vs. Chevy.
