I was wondering if anybody has an experience with a Givi or other aftermarket top box for a 2013 F800GT? I really could use a top box to complement my BMW saddle bags but the BMW top box, while very attractive, is very small. Do the non-BMW boxes mount well and are the extra brake lights a working option for a BMW bike?

Oh, and pictures would be helpful.

    Thanks!

    -Rebecca

Use the forum's search function and I think you will find several examples of Givi, Shad and (in my case) Krauser top boxes being used. You will gain more space, at the expense of the convenience of having one key for the ignition and luggage. Here's a couple of pictures of mine, a K45.

From the days when you could not buy anything large and decent for less than GBP200 there has been an explosion in recent times of very inexpensive cases - all available on ebay. However, possibly the best combination of price/quality is the "Kappa" range made by Givi. While not as well finished as the "real thing" these are nevertheless solidly constructed, waterproof and use the same "Monokey" (10 kg capacity for motorcycle use) and "Monolock" (3 to 4 kg capacity for scooters) mounting systems.
    http://www.giviluggage.co/givi-lugga...ey-technology/
The Givi/Kappa "Universal Mounting Plate" plate fits the GT rear carrier perfectly - though you'll need longer bolts than the ones supplied. I've used both Givi and Kappa cases on an ST and GT with complete satisfaction.

even if in italian, it has got interesting photos for you to check. the last ones (f800s red with givi) is my moto, and consider that s,st, and gt got the exact same back rack.
i mounted the givi just yesterday, with the universal "e251" givi mounting.
speaking of the topcase itself, you can practically choose the color of each component, so it will be good on your moto.

I have a Givi Mono-lock box fitted, I've just used the standard ally plate and drilled four holes in it.

The advantage with this box is that whilst the capacity is good is doesn't hang out too far so the rear lights are still easily visible.

I priced the bmw top box here in Aus. It cost $750 so I bought the Shad sh40 $165 it is strong, waterproof and looks good. I have been using it most days for a couple of months and think it is great.

JC Whitney makes a perfectly good top box for less that a hundred bucks that works. I've been putting them on my beemers for years.

Thank you everybody for your comments and advice! I'm likely to get a Givi top box as they are both more affordable and more visible than the BMW top box but am having a difficult time finding a dealer in the Chicago area.

By the way has anybody had any luck mounting a top box that has brake lights within the box itself? Givi makes them as an option. If so can you remove the top box once you wire the brake lights in (like a trailer) or are you stuck with the top box?

    Hi Rebecca

If you opt for the Givi with brake light figment it makes no difference to the use of the box and you remove it exactly the same as those without additional lights. The power for the lights is transmitted to the box via a contact in the rack and base of the box

I added a Givi E340, which is a smaller trunk. It works great for commuting. It holds a 13" laptop and a lunch bag with space to spare.

    Help!

For the GT specific Givi topcase adaptor it appears you have to remove two of the inner bolts for the inner rack. Does anybody know what kind of drivers these require? They look like star pattern screwdrivers (or a large Torx) driver. Once the bolts are removed the Givi ones go right in there and would seem to add extra stability to the mounting for their case.

Sorry I think I did replicate this on a different thread also.

Rebs you can use the universal plate. I had it on mine, it looks good and is a lot cheaper than the model specific item.

Or like mine use any cheap secondhand plate and just drill four holes in it and use coach bolts and a universal fitting kit.

Carlos but did you have to drill also the bmw rack? I wouldn't suggest to drill the original Bmw metal rack, it's pretty pricey...mostly because the E251 Givi universal plate costs really a few bucks (paid mine 30€ on ebay), and when one day you will remove it for whatever reason, the Bmw will be as new.

No, didn't drill the rack, I just used coach bolts and metal strips (with rubber to protect the rack) like these

then it's the exact same mechanism of the universal plate, and it works for well and good.

Its the same principle, its just the plate I used is aluminum and seems a bit more robust, plus it was thrown in free with the box!

Carlos you have the monolock plate, which is slightly different from the monokey that I used. The monokey is used on the newer larger cases.

It is a monolock box and plate, however the monokey plate is exactly the same size but has different fixing lugs for the box, so you can just drill and fit any plate the way I have.

The point I was trying to make is that Rebs should pick the box/top case she wants before looking at the plates

Its funny really because I have a E250 plate for sale on eBay at the moment. It would just cost the earth to send to the US

Thanks for your help everybody! I did eventually get the Torx-45 driver and got the bolts out of the original rack. I did get the 47L Monokey trunk buy Givi and it's gorgeous! The trunk adaptor works amazingly well and sits very steady on the bike. I did stick with the FGT specific plate as I didn't have to modify it at all or get longer bolts as others have commented. Pictures to come. I'm still deciding if I should keep the 15L Givi tank bag I got. It's kinda big to be honest.

I've never heard anyone describe a topbox as "gorgeous" I personally hate them, IMO they completely destroy the lines of the bike, but they are incredibly useful and make the bike really versatile, I only have mine on the bike when absolutely necessary.

I also want to replace the tiny BMW topcase and have a Givi 52l box and mounting plate from another bike in the garage, but I really do not want to add another key onto the key ring.

Has anyone had any success getting a BMW lock into a Givi case or any other case for that matter?

"Go big or go home"...my mantra!! LOL!! I have a pretty substantial Nelson Riggs tank bag and I got used to it pretty quickly. I couldn't ride long distance without all my bags now!! Welcome, Rebecca!! Love to see more estrogen here...!!

Thank you Tonya! I love seeing more and more women on the roads!

Are you able to get into a full tuck with the larger tank bag? I find I like to get all the way down at highway speeds to get out of the airstream into the incredible quiet behind the screen. It's surprisingly comfortable and wonderfully quiet there.

Well...After the new windshield and the addition of the Givi 47L topbox this is what my bike looks like now (somewhat covered in bugs also). I apologize if the picture may have rotated. I'm not sure how that may have happened.

Pictures taken from camera phones and many other smarter digital cameras have a rotation attribute stamped on them that tells the viewing software which way up is supposed to actually be. The camera always takes the image from one true angle then says rotate it so the side that was up when it was shot is the side up when displayed.
Imagine taking a sideways photo on film, if you look at the film strip horizontally your sideways shots are 90 degrees the wrong way.

In the case of this image the rotation information is missing so the web browser just thinks it must be in it's original position of horizontal and shows it that way.
This picture is 864 pixels wide by 648 pixels tall.
You can open it in any image editing software, rotate it properly and re-save it and it should be 648 by 864 and display properly from that point on.

Just fitted the givi v47nn tech. What a great box, got two shoei helmets inside and it looks so smart. Better than the rip off bmw one. I can live with 2 keys!

    Hi Pat
Will this kit fit my 2014 f 800 gt? Is this the version you mention please? Just needs longer bolts? I want to fit a givi or kappas top box using a universal kit.

The Givi universal plates will fit the GT rack. However, I believe the fittings for the Monokey and Monolock boxes might be different.

I have the E45 Monolock box and it has two lugs on its front edge which hook under the raised tab on the universal plate. Looks like the Monokey universal plate has two lugs which fit into the front of the box ?

I have used earlier version of the Monokey universal plate on both 2007 ST and 2013 GT[rear rack is same on ST &GT]. Fitted with supplied hardware except for the 4 bolts ---- you need to buy longer ones. I recently bought a 2019 GT and, as the plastic of old plate was marked and faded, I bought the new E251 version as shown in your link. fitted fine using longer bolts from previous bike.
I have a Givi 52 litre Monokey box [20 years old !!] for touring and a Givi 33 litre Monokey [now discontinued] for day rides. Both excellent.

I was going to say that I have both the Monolock and the Monokey top boxes and they both attach to the same Givi mounting plate as shown in your attached photo. But, I was wrong. After watching that video I realized that I had two types of Monokey boxes that just look different and open differently, but both are basically the same. Anyway, they work well and are good value for the money.

I have a Givi Monolock mounting plate on both my F800R and Honda Super Cub C125. The 34 litre Givi topbox lives on my Beemer and a 30 litre on my Super Cub. The good thing is that they are interchangeable between the two bikes.

Same rack as my 2015 F800R. The Givi Monolock mounting plate fits nicely. I drilled my rack to fit two bolts to hold the plate on more securely.

Looks neat. I am going to get the monolock. So you just used the stanadard monolock plate and kit that came with it, using the W shaped clamps with longer bolts?
