A friend from San Diego has had a hard-on for one of these for a couple years. Wonder if they will ever go beyond the prototype?
$6500,That was the original price, or so for a road worthy high mileage moto-toy. Mr Frugal should love that!

They are very cool but a lot of chatter whether they are a scam. They have missed many promised dates while just shipping hats and t-shirts - while taking deposits. The business model they shared makes little sense. They would need to sell incredible numbers of the things and an unbelievable price point to break even.

I hope it is not scam because I think are a quirky-cool machine, but to build a vehicle at that price in the US does stretch plausibility.

If you have ever had your plausibility stretched, you'd know how much that hurts.

I believe if you look into it the company that designed the original motor has some connection with VW.

Not a lot new under the sun! (60 years on)
My guess is about a 15% chance of producing and selling any sort of decent production run. But what would I know? I bought my second VW diesel three weeks ago...

Timing is everything. i was running errands on Saturday and gave the local VW dealership a horn toot of support as I drove by. I'm sure they are all living the "coffee is for closers" scene from GlenGarry Glenn Ross. I wouldn't want my retirement stocks heavily invested in VW, but I'm guessing that the VW car owner, will be just fine. I just hate that you were sold a false bill of goods. On a better note, Hamilton Beach is replacing my Mellita coffee maker that crapped out after a solid 3 months of morning brewing. At least they didn't lie about the jitters/mile.

When Studebaker stopped producing cars in the 1950's, some of their dealers started selling DKW (three-cylinder 850/1000cc two-stroke autos) automobiles. Not one of the smartest things that they ever did. It is a mystery to me how VW is going to dig their way out of this hole and how their dealers are going to keep making a living in the future. I don't think DKW makes cars anymore.

Seriously, things are changing. Who is riding now days…old men mostly as younger people aren't all that interested in cars, ect. iPhone,PC, Game Boy maybe but, actually manually driving or riding? Not so much. My buddy who has in the car business for 40 years says that the Google car and Apple car is going be it and soon. They have actually been running semi's with the tech in the West! The open road is not as open as it once was. So what is coming. Any thoughts?

In Aus it has gone from being predominantly manual transmissions in cars in the 70s to approx 95% automatics with the latest figures.
Fleets have to purchase automatic cars, unless they are not available in the vehicle of choice, to ensure they don't discriminate against the non-manual licensed drivers.
Modern society are getting lazy due to all the technology available to them to "make their life easier" and "save time", even though it now takes longer to do many tasks with some of these "time saving" products.
Many a young person would now rather sit in their room and play computer games than get out in the real world and find real adventure.

So, what's coming? I don't know but I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as having three pedals and the gear knob in the hand to changing gears, or multi tasking with using all one's appendages to ride a two wheeled machine.

In the USA they would stick to the tax payer….

Well, VW could open the old factories in Mexico and Brazil and make BUGS again. Make the Vanagon too.
Get their head out of the Biggest in the world auto maker ass. It's all about the money the guys in charge make and bugger the laws and making the best they can.

If it were a Japanese company in the old day the leaders would commit Hari Kari for an honorable closure. Modern Europe and US, they just deny everything.

Perhaps the new adventure seeker would rather use 3-D glasses to find the next adrenaline dose. I don't know. I feel for them if they forego a chance to interact with nature. There really is no finer stimulus.

I was able to leave work a bit early today and took one of my favorite detours NW of Bend. I justified the 45 minutes as useful to "scrub in" the new front tire. Nothing like cranking the throttle and feeling the back end of this beast get loose and find the edge of my comfort zone. I don't think Google cars will include this as an option.

I read a study several months back and many young people would prefer not to drive but be transported while the interact with mobile devices and social media. Self-driving a la the Google car.

I guess I am an old fart too... one who enjoys manual transmissions in cars and exploring on a motorcycle. I have Buick Regal Turbo with a six speed manual which I drive. I was a VW guy for years, but they dropped the manual in the Passat (and cheapened the US model) and I unexpectedly liked the Buick. Now Buick announced it too is dropping the manuals in 2016. Guess I'll just drive it till it dies, then get a lobotomy and buy a Google car.

The silly thing about the whole VW saga is - I am really enjoying the car! It is a Passat Alltrack with a few extras ("Sport Pack", 18"wheels, paddleshift. full leather, etc. Not as kinky as that sounds, but a very satisfying car to drive ) When and if we get a recall to blow the bugs out of the CPU in Aus., I have not heard yet. My partner called into local VW to look at trading in her Golf on a new one, and reports it was very quiet in the showroom....

I take it then that VW not only is in trouble with the EPA in the US, but in your neck 'o the woods as well? I wonder if other car manufacturers are doing the same thing. I heard that the reason their corruption wasn't caught until now, was because car manufacturer's were allowed to prevent anyone, including regulatory organizations, from accessing the car computer controlling emissions, in order to prevent individual owners from tampering. It really is too bad that they felt the need to do this. I guess they were following the criminal's motto - it is only illegal if I get caught.

I understand that fully 50% of Europe's vehicles are diesel powered and the air, even in Paris is worse then LA. It is one more sign that the petroleum based transportation industry is "Kaput".

Toyota Mirai is hydrogen powered and coming soon.

Wind power has been on the rise all over the country but, there has been no way to store the energy when it is not needed. You can however, make hydrogen and store it in tanks using wind power and water.

Do you mean taking polls in the places where the majority of people live? Hmmm....... seems that if my goal were to take a poll... of people....and I sought the opinion of many people... I might want to go where the people were located.

The "majority of people" do not live in NYC or LA. There is a large concentration, but not "the majority". Cherry picking one's polling population is a time tested means of spinning one's results.

If you read the material about the purpose of the Elio you will find that it is targeted at the city commuter car. Most have one person in them.

My observation of most young people now days is they aren't as interested in vehicles like us older folks who grew up in the days of open roads, less people, and some pretty cool cars. Times have changed….

Maybe in Madison every red blooded Mullet headed boy dreams of having a chevy pick up and not an I phone?
I love the commercial where the 2 twin girls are sitting on either side of the dad and are texting each other.
A real clear statement of what corporate America wants it's youth to be.

It seems to me that the younger folk ( damn, that means I'm in the older folk crowd) are of two main types. One being the iPhone. ect couch potato majority and the other minority that does the X games crazy shit that the couch potato group twitter's, Facebook's and messages about.
