Thanks for posting the link to that article.
Highly capable bike's the old bricks but preferred the old boxers myself for their simplicity.
Not too many around here in regular use these days but still see the occasional well used one being used as a winter hack.

I fell in love with the design lines of the original bike.
Then when you get to looking further at it, you see that the form followed function. Low CG. Ability to get to everything for servicing. My belief is that the K100 was the direction BMW wanted to take the company, and to drop the boxer engine.
I think what doomed the bike was the BMW buying community. They liked the uniqueness of the engine cylinders sticking out the side. Moto Guzzi will probably always have their engine cylinders sticking out the sides too for the same reason.
So like it or not, the K100 died and BMW has nursed the boxer engine along in incremental steps to keep it competitive. The bike that is at the bleeding edge of technology for the company, is arguably the S1000RR...a non-boxer BMW.
