Our illustrious leader is proposing $11 billion in new tariffs on EU imports, according to an article in my newspaper yesterday published by the Bloomberg News. The primary reason for the tariffs is apparently to protect Boeing from Airbus sales (heaven knows that Boeing certainly could use some protecting right now ). Along with a tariff on EU aircraft, tariffs would also be placed on passenger helicopters (what no drones? ), cheese, ski-suits , wine and motorcycles. Apparently all U.S. manufacturing companies that need to be protected from EU imports.

Well, I can see the need to make French wine and Swiss cheese cost more in the U.S., but motorcycles? Give me a break. Don't BMW, Ducati, Triumph and KTM motorcycles already cost enough? At least the price of Ural sidecar rigs will not increase due to the imposition of an EU tariff.

I agree. Especially that business about taxing motorcycle accessory imports. Where did that come from?

Of course he'd never put a tariff on Urals - he isn't going to go after his RUSSIAN friends!!

It will be interesting to see if this affects Harley's plans to build bikes in Europe though.

My daughter works for a company that sells stainless steel lunch boxes around the world. She told me last night that their customers are telling them that the EU (in this case it was Germany) have just started charging a 25% import tariff that they need to pay when they pick up their order.

In other news: UK Prime Minster May has just announced her resignation, to be effective in two weeks, and is going to let someone else try to figure out Brexit. The current front-runner for the job is said to be the former mayor of London, a guy named Boris, who is claimed to be a lot like the Donald. This ought to be fun.

The AMA's American Motorcyclist magazine picked up the story in their June 2019 issue. On page 12 is an article that discusses the proposed tariff that would be placed on European brand motorcycles with displacements of between 500cc and 700cc. This would be in retaliation for EU subsidies to Airbus commercial aircraft. The tariffs would be placed on a list of European goods totaling about $11 billion. At least BMW no longer has any motorcycles of that displacement, so they will miss that bullet.
