Here in South Africa where I stay many vehicles make a noise and noise is no problem. Will it adversely affect the 2009 F800S if I just remove the can and turn its incoming pipe into the can down to face at an angle towards the ground?

Not recommended, not only will it make a LOT of noise, but also it will affect performance of the engine, as the exhaust system and engine management are carefully tuned by the manufacturer. Better look for a replacement can, with a dB killer that can be removed.

Pretty pointless doing that - it will be unbearable riding any distance. I found even adding an open race can on my old ST quite uncomfortable especially without earplugs. F800's can make a LOT of noise !

Do not do that, buy a nice muffler that will give you a nice exhaust note

Yes. Expect decreased power and torque. You'll also notice an increase in gas consumption as you will use more to accomplish the same as before.

Modern engines are finely tuned for air intake, fuel intake, combustion and exhaust. You can't change just one without negative effects to output.
    Concrete remains undefeated.
