Has anyone tried a seat from an ST or R on the GT?

Was it any more comfortable or an improvement in shape over the stock GT seat? (The stock GT seat pushes me into the tank and is not comfortable on long rides).

Something like this seat....the one with the hump on the passenger portion.

There's a description of each seat to include seat height at the website.

I didn't want to buy an expensive BMW "optional" seat - but rather a stock ST or S or R "take off" or eBay parts bike.

The thread where the fellow bought a used bike with an ST seat got my mind wondering.

    ....
    @Thumping
If I've read what Chris has posted correctly, it lists seats and their compatibility between the F800 GT/S/R/ST

This should give you the information that you need if you're planning an e-bay purchase.

Having owned both an ST and a GT, I found both stock seats to be uncomfortable. I went with a Sargent seat on both bikes. They're expensive but worth it.

Exactly! The picture shows that the GT, R, S and ST share the same identical seat.

And if Thumpin (or anyone else) wants to know more about any of the seats, there's a description of each on the web page.

If you want the most comfortable seat you ever sat on try https://www.terryscustomseats
They are reasonably priced, but the down side is they take about 6 months to finish. It's a long wait, but it's totally worth it in the end.

I did buy a Sargent in November when they were on sale - I have not had a chance to ride for any length of time on it as winter is here. There have only been a few days that the weather was warm enough that I could sneak in a short 20 mile ride.

I was just exploring the idea that maybe there was a lower cost alternative for folks who have not yet bought a new Sargent seat. A nice used seat from an F800ST or F800R or F800S can be purchased for considerably less money - but if there is no comfort improvement it is not worth pursuing.

There is a comfort seeat from BMW, but I don't think it's cheaper than a sargeant.

One could also buy a cheap used seat and bring it a good saddle maker.

I'm in the same boat, 10 hour days are no good on the R, I like to spend time standing up a lot. Have been pulled over before for doing that. (officer thought I might be doing wheelies. At night, with cases, and bags, in full leather) I might go Sargent heated option. Might wait for a sale though. I've heard good things about the comfort seat from BMW, but have yet to sit on one. To the dealer I gooooooooooooo.....

    .... will report!

Have you tried an Airhawk seat cushion? I find on long trips that while I'm riding, I can pull it forward to raise the front of the seating area, or push it back. In my case, it is to change the pressure area on my tailbone, but it also would keep you from sliding into the tank.

If you find the Airhawk isn't comfortable, try letting air out of it. The secret I've found for an Airhawk, is to let out all the air you think is to the point of being to much air released...and then let out some more. You want about a 1/4 inch of separation between the top and bottom of the cushion. Without the Airhawk, I can ride in the local area on the stock seat but it gets painful as the hours add up. With the Airhawk, I can ride 10-12 hour days with no problem.

I have not yet tried an Airhawk - but I may go that route as the R1200RT seat is not very comfortable either. I am also considering a nice black sheepskin that can be placed on the seat before long rides.

I have a 2012 ST and while the bike was in for service, I got a 2014 F800GT. Being vertically challenged, my seat was redone by Bill Mayer. We swapped the seats while I had the loaner. No problems.

No help whatsoever unless you are in Australia . Mick in Goulburn, NSW, makes the most comfortable seats. He turned my "2 hour seat" on my GT into an all day seat. about a 30 day turnaround.

The comfort of stock BMW seats is the reason Sargent is in business . . .
