Sounds good but I don't think you can count on any of those republican's to do the right thing,,.
You are very likely too right! When I wrote that I did not know MM sentiment was at least 2nd hand, but apparently some are considering the implications of not doing this going forward w/ regard to the repub party's future. I'll never forget them I know.

Noel,,, Of major consequence would be a count along the same lines as in the certification for Biden vote,,. That would take between 70 and 90 House Republican's to vote for impeachment, and would go a long ways towards the messaging, perhaps even half those numbers would be consequential and could move the needle in the Senate for further early action IMO,,.

    "Good people on both sides"

Ex-Chester Firefighter Threw Extinguisher at Capitol Police, Feds Say
    Video link
    https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news...arges/2668708/

Robert Sanford, who recently retired from the Chester Fire Department in March, was arrested on charges that include assault of a police officer, disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, civil disorder and unlawfully entering the Capitol.

A retired Pennsylvania firefighter was arrested Thursday on federal charges that he threw a fire extinguisher that hit three Capitol Police officers during the violent siege on the Capitol last week.

The charges against Sanford are not related to the widely publicized attack on Officer Brian Sicknick, who also was attacked with a fire extinguisher during the siege and died.

I cant get over this weird collections of Mad men & Women that stormed the US Capital on the 6th,,. For all the debates on Trumpism, Trump economics, Trump Foreign Policy, Racism & the Walls he tried to build there is one success that is beyond debate,,. Indeed. Read about this peach in Colorado: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren_Boebert

This is yet another gun-obsessed, complete Trump disciple. She was apparently tweeting Pelosi's location out during the Capitol insurrection. I hope they nail her bigtime. You can't help but marvel at 'born again Christian' identity mentioned in the Wiki article.

Lost all respect for the 81% of socalled 'evangelicals' whose 'spiritual wisdom' had them in full support of Trump, presumably many to the bitter end. So much for spiritual wisdom. But as said before, they live in a totally different reality so not all that surprising, just sad and worse than that, dangerous. Separate church and state, great idea. Sad for me personally because I identified w/ evangelical Christianity as a 19-20y/o having had an unsought after a powerful 'spiritual' awakening experience that changed my life--it was a sudden awareness of the presence of God, and that 'sin' was more about living w/o awareness of God's presence than specific bad deeds per se. My best friend's family were devout evangelicals, so I began becoming familiar w/ the dogma then. I always believed had I been in a culture dominated by another religion I would very likely have sought out their fellowship.

Yesterday certainly didn't have much in the way of protests from Trump supporters in spite of how the media and politicians were trying to drum up their business to add color to yesterday's events. The weird thing is that the only "protests" that I have heard about were three groups of a few hundred anti-police, anti-government and anti-Biden "protesters" each all dressed in black and carrying shields and weapons.

One group was at the capital in Sacramento, but they certainly were not Trump supporters as one MAGA guy in a pickup truck was taunting them and was chased down the street by a few of the group.

Two other mobs of "protesters" were to be found in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. They were also all dressed in black, smashing windows and writing anti-police and anti-Biden graffiti on buildings. The group in Seattle also smashed federal court building windows and attacked the Democratic party HQ in Seattle. There was not a red hat to be found in any of the groups. Just black, including a few "Black Lives Matter" flags. So now what is going on? What do these protesters really want? And why come out yesterday during the change in the administration?

Probable actors hired by Roger Stone & Paul Manaford with some of the 300 million they scammed off the MAGA crowd,,. He has got-to pay for his pardon, as will Steve Bandon in the months to come with the moneys he scammed off the Build the Wall non-profit,,. If anyone can look at that pardon list and the crimes that they were previously convicted or indicted for without questioning what Trumpism really stands for needs to consider how any of this "drains the swamp" or makes "America Great",,!!

I just heard a report on the local CBS radio station that Trump called someone (apparently he had to make a telephone call now that his Tweet account has been locked) and said that he was thinking of starting a third political party called the Patriot Party or MAGA Party (he sure knows how to pick names) to run against the Democrats and Republicans in 2024. As you can imagine, Republicans freaked out when they heard that and now are worried about jumping on the dump Trump impeachment bandwagon. If he started a third party made up of the radical portion of the Republican party that voted for him, that would really put a stake through the heart of the Grand Old Party.

If the GOP folks want to give Trump a pass on the impeachment conviction it would be wise for the Dems to hang them out to dry on the Article 14 provision,,. Maybe they could get control of things in 2022 and right the ship or at least start the long process of de-radicalizing millions of people,,!!

An obscure provision of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution has emerged as a possible means of preventing former President Donald Trump from holding future federal office as Congress grapples with how best to punish him for his role in the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment states that "no person shall be a senator or representative in Congress" or "hold any office, civil or military" if they, after having taken an oath to support the Constitution, "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."

My thought was that while there might be mutual interest for both parties to invoke this "Disability" if Trump is given a pass along party lines, however as per Richards suggestion "that it would really put a stake through the heart of the Grand Old Party." it may be more beneficial politically to the GOP to see this happen especially if they could blame it on the so called Libtards,,.

The 14th amendment. I looked up Article 14 and was referred to the constitution of India. I am aware of that section of the 14th amendment; it has been widely reported in the news recently. First though, Trump has to be found guilty of the impeachment charges before the 14th amendment section applies. If the two-thirds vote to convict can be found, the simple majority vote to invoke the 14th amendment should be simple to achieve.

The idea also has been floated of stripping Trump of his pension and Secret Service protection detail along with other perks enjoyed by former presidents. Not sure what that would take, but apparently, it is possible.

On the other hand, a Trump Library has been mentioned. Perhaps a place to store his four years' worth of 30,000+ lies and misstatements?

I heard something today about the Supreme Court dropping the emolument clause violation law suits by Trump. I wonder how they justified that? You would think that would be a slam-dunk?

Disappointing they used the excuse that he is no longer in office?

The Big news today is this? Justice Department watchdog investigating possible attempt to overturn election results?
    https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/25/polit...ion/index.html

(CNN)The Justice Department's internal watchdog will investigate whether any department official sought to have the department overturn President Joe Biden's election win.

The office of Inspector General Michael Horowitz is launching "an investigation into whether any former or current DOJ official engaged in an improper attempt to have DOJ seek to alter the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election," it announced Monday.
The probe comes on the heels of reports from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal that former President Donald Trump attempted to use his Justice Department to challenge the election results, an effort that included the possibility of Trump ousting then-acting Attorney General Jeffery Rosen.

I don't understand the concept that once a president leaves office you can no longer try him for his federal law and Constitutional offenses. If he gets impeached by Congress I wonder what the reaction of the Supreme Court will be when he appeals his conviction to the Supreme Court?

The Senate is unlikely to convict even though a majority of the people favor conviction. Too many senators value their jobs more than they value justice.

Yes, by the looks of things, storming the Capital and chasing Congress, & Mike Pence around with a hang mans noose does not rise to the level of an impeachment conviction,,. As with the Supreme Court decision on the Emoluments cases, there is something rotten in the State of Denmark,,!!

This is looking like a game of Whac-A-Mole, every time Trump beats or delays a judgement another two legal cases pop up in its place,,.

    1) The hush-money allegations, campaign-finance violations

    2) The tax and bank fraud investigation, extensive criminal conduct at the Trump Organization, insurance and bank fraud.

    3) The real-estate fraud investigation, extensive and protracted criminal financial practices at the Trump Organization

    4) The Rape & Sexual misconduct lawsuits

    5) The Mary Trump lawsuit, In it, she accuses Mr Trump and two of his siblings of cheating her out of an inheritance

    6) Justice Department watchdog investigating possible attempt to overturn election results

    7) Georgia investigation into election Fraud & Extortion

    8) US justice department bribery inquiry into Pardons

    9) Dominion Voting Systems defamation suit against Trump, his Lawyers including Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powel the Trump Campaign

    10) Second impeachment of Donald Trump, the 2021 impeachment on a charge of incitement of insurrection

My newspaper had an article regarding the Supreme Court's emoluments decision. They said that the lawsuit was "moot". And there were no dissenting opinions.

Ya, I don't get that either, especially from the Supreme Court,.

So now today, all but 5 Republican Senators vote that convicting a President after he has run out the clock, (much in the same way as the Supreme court rules), is unconstitutional,,. So basically the last few weeks of a President's term he can lie and cheat and embezzle as much he wants so long as he can run out the clock?
So how would a Democracy function if everyone was treated to those same rules?

    Anyway,,, Trump 2 Democracy 0

IMHO,,,,,,, I think this whole impeachment thing is ill conceived, past experience has proven that it doesn't work, no president has been convicted of impeachment,,.
You cant have these Senator's and Congress people voting on conviction when they are totally compromised, the last trial didn't even call witnesses, its a sham and has the opposite effect to what was intended,.

They should have a Special Counsel investigation into the whole matter of Election Fraud/Conspiracy to Incite an Insurrection instead of muddying the facts with impeachment,,. People should be investigated at all levels, if there's pardons, they should be tested in court,,. The only ones that will be punished now are the Dum Asses that believed the "Big Lie" and followed along, it will help little to set the record strait with the public,,.

Ununited States of America honorable senators voted to say the honorable man Donald J Trump is a fine, upstanding private citizen worthy of holding any public service position he finds himself elected to.

Well done honorable senators, you must be proud of yourselves.

McConnell blames Trump but voted not guilty anyway

    https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/13/polit...ump/index.html

McConnell sharply criticized his former ally in a speech on the Senate floor shortly after Trump was cleared in a 57-43 vote, saying the rioters had been "fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth. Because he was angry he'd lost an election."
"Former President Trump's actions that preceded the riot were a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty," added McConnell. "Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day."
But McConnell -- who, as Senate majority leader last month, rejected calls by Senate Democrats for a speedy trial during Trump's final days in office -- said Trump was constitutionally ineligible for conviction since the punishment is removal, and Trump was already out of office. McConnell claimed that a verdict before Joe Biden's inauguration had been impossible.

McConnell argued that "impeachment was never meant to be the final forum for American justice," but suggested Trump could be subject to criminal prosecution in the future.
"We have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation. And former Presidents are not immune from being held accountable by either one," he said.
House impeachment managers had asserted that there should not be a "January exception" for impeachment, contending that it's a crucial tool for Congress to hold the president accountable, and that the pro-Trump riot proved once again that the most dangerous time in a democracy is during the transfer of power. A conviction also would have led to a subsequent vote to disqualify Trump from holding public office again.
The typically tight-lipped Senate Republican leader rarely broke from Trump in his four years as president. But he led the Senate's certification of the presidential election that the rioters pledged to overturn, and strongly condemned the violence at the Capitol he has served in as a senator for 36 years.

Apparently not being reelected and becoming a private citizen again, instead of a powerful and important Senator, is greater than being hung, shot, or beat up by a mob. I guess that tells you something about having power. I know that D.J.T. has definitely developed an appreciation for power and believes he has achieved absolute power and all of the perks that comes along with it. Unfortunately it looks like we have definitely not heard the last of that guy. And he is definitely the concrete overshoes that will be dragging the GOP into the deep blue sea in coming years. This will leave the U.S. with only one political party running the country and I don't think that is such a good idea. History has shown that one party rule always ends up with a rigid government that can not abide with different views and free speech.

If Mr. Trump had been found guilty in the impeachment trial, what penalty might he have suffered? Perhaps a blow to his ego? He could not be removed from office, which is the only penalty for conviction because he was already out of office. Possibly, the Senate could have gone further and banned him from ever holding office again. What would be the point? Is there any real likelihood that he could successfully run for president in 2024, or even try? If he could not win as the incumbent in 2020, any chance of him prevailing in 2024 seems very slim indeed.

Many are disappointed with Mitch McConnell for voting to acquit. Consider that McConnell has been in the Senate since 1985; he was re-elected in 2020 for another six-year term. When the present term is completed, he will be 84 years old. It seems quite remote that he is concerned, in contrast to many other senators, about re-election.

Let us assume that McConnell is highly intelligent, and let us assume that he understands how government works. Also let us assume that he knew that he held the ability to decide whether Mr. Trump would be acquitted or found guilty. Many believe that if McConnell had voted guilty, a sufficient number of other senators would have followed his lead to ensure a guilty verdict.

Then what? Trump would walk free to continue his mischief. Where is the justice in that? Although, by a guilty verdict from the Senate, many might believe that Trump got what he deserved, and they would be pleased to see the end of this tragic episode in our history. However, as previously questioned, where is the penalty? McConnell, by his vote, has left us dissatisfied. He, by voting to acquit and then in his speech making it absolutely crystal clear that Trump could be held to account both criminally and civilly for his actions, practically begged that Trump be charged as a private citizen.

If, as McConnell appears to hope for, Trump is charged for his actions, the penalties are severe. There could be years in prison for his being complicit in the resulting deaths, and also he could be subject to substantial fines for the cost to the government of quelling the insurrection and the damage to the Capitol.

What would be the chances of conviction on multiple charges if a trial was held before a D.C. jury?

I heard today on the noon news that a congressman is suing Trump in Federal court for unspecified damages saying he violated a law that was passed after the Civil War to prevent the KKK from interfering with official government functions. (Or something like that.)

Yep, there was a long article this morning in the Washington Post. The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) filed a federal law suit against Trump, the law suit also names Rudy Giuliani, the Proud Boys, and the Oath Keepers Two other representatives are expected to join with Thompson.

Hopefully Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) has the goods to back this up,,. They don't need 100 legal actions that fail, they just need one good one that gets at the facts,,. Hind sight is 20-20 however I think the whole impeachment did more damage then good,,. They should have know from last time that this wasn't going to end in a conviction and now the acquittal is being used as an exoneration again,,.

They should have pushed for a special prosecutor to do a through & complete investigation and then pressed charges at every level, weeks and months have passed and the Trump acting AG hasn't even interviewed the main protagonists,,. The only people they have caught up with are the dum-assess, most of whom will get off because they are mentally unstable,,!!

Trump is already threatening Republicans that he felt did not support him. He apparently went on a social media rant calling McConnell names and saying that he would go after other Republicans that don't like him and support people that run against them that do support him. It sure didn't take long before he went back to stirring the pot again. As soon as he was declared not guilty, he lost any restraint on his personal agenda and is sure to cause trouble for everyone that he can.

I think that the acquittal of #45 was a forgone conclusion. But the impeachment had to be done.
The Republican senators that voted to acquit know he is guilty of the charges, and this is not an exoneration.
They did not have the balls of the backbone to convict, they are afraid of losing his base.
They sold out the country for their own skin.
In the end I think he will be shunned like Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy.
And eventually the shit will hit the fan.
And he will get what he deserves.

With the cold snap and freezing conditions creating havoc in the southern states it's great to see Texas Senator (Rep) Ted Cruz leading from the front. Front of the airplane, that is. Running like a rat leaving the sinking ship, heading for the warmer climes of Cancun.

Republicans putting themselves ahead of the rest of the people as usual.

Maybe he was just having a little looksee at the wall, big beautiful wall. Very fine views, from both sides, apparently.

    Quotes from the swamp

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham

“If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,” the former presidential candidate said at the Washington Press Club Foundation’s 72nd Congressional Dinner, referencing the Texas senator’s unpopular reputation on Capitol Hill.

    former House Speaker John Boehner

"Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner told an audience at Stanford University on Wednesday night, according to the Stanford Daily. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”

Former Republican congressional aide, John Feehery

"Cruz is an army of one, alienating anybody who is in his path. He advocates losing strategies purely to further his own career at the expense of the party."

Former roommate at Princeton University; now a Hollywood screenwriter Craig Mazin

"I would rather have anybody else be the president of the United States. Anyone. I would rather pick somebody from the phone book."

Conservative media personality and Trump supporter, Ann Coulter

"Just look at Cruz's face: it's got career scum politician, aka liar, written all over it."

Trump and Cruz, who dropped out of the GOP primary in May 2016, attacked each other's wives, citizenship, and integrity. They even threatened to sue, accusing each other of lying and cheating for various reasons.

After Trump won the party's nomination, Cruz refused to endorse him at the Republican National Convention.

Cruz finally came around to make that endorsement in September 2016, and the two have worked together on Republican legislation since Trump took office.

By October 22, 2018, Trump even decided that Cruz was no longer "lyin' Ted" — his notorious nickname for the senator during the campaign — and was now "beautiful Ted." The president made the announcement ahead of a campaign rally he hosted in Texas to support Cruz's tough reelection bid.

February/11/21 A group of GOP senators met with former President Trump's legal team on Thursday to discuss strategy as they prepare to present their opening arguments in the impeachment trial.

Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) were spotted entering the meeting, which took place in a room near the Senate chamber that Trump's team is using as a workspace.

Cruz told reporters after the meeting that they were talking strategy for the defense's opening arguments on Friday.

Considering that Cruz seems to have burned all of his political bridges, how did he manage to get elected? He must have said things that Texans loved to hear. But I imagine that his trip to Mexico while everyone else in the state is cold, hungry and thirsty, might just be a bridge too far.

I hear that Senator Cruz recommends visiting Cancun, Mexico with the family and staying at a luxury hotel for $350 a night to beat the Texas deep freeze. He also left his dog Snowflake at his unheated home in the care of a private security guard. What a guy!
