How long can the virus survive on surfaces?

The New England Journal of Medicine just published a study that tested how long the virus can remain stable on different kinds of surfaces within a controlled laboratory setting. They found that it was still detectable on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours.
But its important to note that the amount of virus decreased rapidly over time on each of those surfaces. And so the risk of infection from touching them would probably decrease over time as well. - The Guardian

I have taken to heating the oven to 170 degrees, turn it off and place my mail inside to heat for a half an hour. Heat is suppose to kill the virus and I believe this to be a viable means to kill it.

I will be receiving a $26 do-it-yourself hair cut kit this weekend that I ordered from Amazon. After using that I likely will stay home for months.

In today's what to do during a virus outbreak story, the news this morning reported that a surfer was paddle-boarding by himself in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of a city in Southern California (where else?). After not obeying orders by the life guards and getting out of the ocean, he was grabbed by police in two police boats, dragged to a police station and booked into the local jail for a few hours before being fined and then sent home.

One of the things that everyone seems to be doing is going shopping for as much stuff as they can fit in their trolley. A recent visit to Safeway has seen grocery prices at Safeway climbing rapidly and sale items (such as they are) have diminished, as the demand has increased. Prices seem to have gone up about 50% on some of the items that I have noticed, compared with a month ago. Not a problem for me as I usually only spend about $20 a week on food (twice that if I eat breakfast on Sundays at Alice's Restaurant). Considering how many people have lost their jobs and have had their income reduced, that has got to hurt, assuming that Safeway shoppers even bother to check prices, which is something that I do with everything that I purchase. Nothing like being screwed on things that you need to survive by a big corporation with lots of debt and workers that hate the place. BTW, why are people willing to stand outside in a long queue waiting to be metered into a Safeway store, when they could likely go to a smaller store and have a more positive experience like I did the other day at the Grocery Outlet on the other side of the highway - which allowed me to ride another 1/4 mile on my motorcycle.

I was at my local Ace Hardware store yesterday and their prices have also increased substantially, especially for name-brand items. I noted that the price of fancy glues, as an example, have doubled as they get new inventory in and there are fewer items on sale.

My daughter, who works for a company that sells Chinese-made crap (her words) on Amazon tells me that a lot of Amazon's customers are trying to ship back their toilet paper loads as they now realize that they need money more than TP. She says that the sellers of the product are wondering what to do with the returns and if they should be put back on the shelves and resold. (If they do that I sure hope that the check the rolls first. )

The supermarket chains are no longer paying refunds on toilet paper and other sanitary items that people have hoarded. So those people are stuck with the filling up their garages or houses.

Soon there will be an online recipe book on preparing toilet paper for family meals on a budget.

A bit of local store news here:

New Corona Virus Rules For Seniors: At 7:45 am today at a store that opened at 8 for seniors only . . . A young man came from the parking lot and tried to cut in at the front of the line, but an old lady beat him back into the parking lot with her cane. He returned and tried to cut in again but an old man punched him in the gut, then kicked him to the ground and rolled him away. As he approached the line for the 3rd time he said, "If you don't let me unlock the door, you'll never get in there."

    The History Of Toilet Paper:

With the run on toilet paper that we’ve had it’s nice to learn about its origin.

This is a bit of history that will truly make us thankful. Sometimes it's good to read something that makes you smile! I know that you have always been curious, so now you'll know.

    1. The first recorded use of toilet paper was in 6th Century China.

    2. By the 14th Century, the Chinese government was mass-producing it.

    3. Packaged toilet paper wasn't sold in the United States until 1857.

    4. Joseph Gayety, the man who introduced packaged TP to the U.S., had his name printed on every sheet.

    5. Global toilet paper demand uses nearly 30,000 trees every day.

    6. That's 10 million trees a year.

    7. It wasn't until 1935 that a manufacturer was able to promise Splinter-Free Toilet Paper.

    8. Seven percent of Americans admit to stealing rolls of toilet paper from hotels.

    9. Americans use an average of 8.6 sheets of toilet paper per trip to the bathroom.

    10. The average roll has 333 sheets.

    11. Historically, what you use to wipe depended on your income level.

    12. In the Middle Ages, they used something called a gompf stick, which was just an actual stick used to scrape.

    13. Wealthy Romans used wool soaked in rose water, and French royalty used lace.

    14. Other things that were used before toilet paper include hay, corn cobs, sticks, stones, sand, moss, hemp, wool, husks, fruit peels, ferns, sponges, seashells, knotted ropes, and broken pottery (ouch!).

    15. 70-75% of the world still doesn't use toilet paper because it is too expensive or there is not sufficient plumbing.

    16. In many Western European countries, bidets are seen as more effective and preferable to toilet paper.

    17. Colored toilet paper was popular in the U.S. until the 1940s.

    18. The reason toilet paper disintegrates so quickly when wet is that the fibers used to make it are very short.

    19. On the International Space Station, they still use regular toilet paper, but it has to be sealed in special containers and compressed.

    20. During Desert Storm, the U.S. Army used toilet paper to camouflage their tanks.

    21. In 1973, Johnny Carson caused a toilet paper shortage. He said as a joke that there was a shortage, which there wasn't, until everyone believed him and ran out to buy up the supply. It took three weeks for some stores to get more stock.

    22. There is a contest sponsored by Charmin to design and make wedding dresses out of toilet paper. The winner gets $2,000.

23.. There was a toilet paper museum in Wisconsin, The Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue, but it closed in 2000.

    24. The museum once had over 3,000 rolls of TP from places all over the world, including The Guggenheim, Ellis Island, and Graceland.

    25. There is still a virtual toilet paper museum called Nobody's Perfect.

    26. In 1996, President Clinton passed a Toilet Paper Tax of 6 cents per roll which is still in effect today.

    27. The Pentagon uses, on average, 666 rolls of toilet paper per day.

    28. The most expensive toilet paper in the world is the Portuguese brand, Renova.

    29. Renova is three-ply, perfumed, costs $3 per roll, and comes in several colors including black, red, blue, and green.

    30. The CEO of Renova came up with the idea for black toilet paper while he was at a Cirque du Soleil show.

    31. Beyonc uses only red Renova toilet paper.

    32. Kris Jenner uses only the black Renova toilet paper.

    33. If you hang your toilet paper so you can pull it from the bottom, you're considered more intelligent than someone who pulls it from the top. (Wonder how this was determined?)

    34. Koji Suzuki, a Japanese horror novelist best known for writing The Ring, had an entire novel printed on a single roll of toilet paper.

    35. The novel takes place in a public bathroom, and the entire story runs approximately three feet long.

    36. When asked what necessity they would bring to a desert island, 49% of people said toilet paper before food.

    37. Queen Elizabeth II wipes her royal bottom with silk handkerchiefs. Wonder if the royal chambermaid gets to wash those?? Yeah, sure wouldn't want that job!

    38. Muslims wipe their bums with their bare hand--- always the left hand. They eat with their right hand. If you are caught shop-lifting, your right hand is cut off, forcing you to eat with your poopy left hand. Yeeeechdt!

The complete stupidity of parts of this country is beyond belief.

My longtime friend in Ohio was on the phone talking to me and while we were talking the mailman came up to his mailbox and stayed long enough to sit in the car and eat a burrito with his bare hands. Then after finishing, proceeded to wipe his pie hole and clean his eyes and nose with the napkin then threw the napkin back into the box of mail. He shoved the mail in the mailbox with his bare hands and moved on. Unfucking believable the ignorance at being a Typhoid Mary to the neighborhood.

I love bretagne, France and they drive on the correct side of the road. The countryside is full of bounty. My wife I walked the streets of Roscoff and the stone houses and flowers and amount of produce grown there is amazing. I could spent my last days as a villager there and drink espresso at an outside cafe. Problem is I don't speak French but, I could point real well. At the time my friend owned the Paul Arts Cafe in Daoulas.....He is now retired and has a nice place along the coast not far from the cafe. The first picture was a mistake but, was taken when we were in the Cornish area of Port Isaak, UK where the TV show Dr Martin is filmed. The next day we were in France.

That reminds me. I really believe that most Americans (if not residents of other less wealthy countries) will end the virus lock-down weighing a lot more than they did at its beginning. I find myself eating more than I should while staying at home and while I do like to go out an hike for several miles in the Santa Cruz Mountains at least three times a week to burn those calories off, that option has pretty much been taken away from me during the lock-down. In my county we are not supposed to travel more than five miles to visit a recreational area and there are no public parks or open space sites that remain open within that distance. We have dozens of ocean beaches along the coast in my county, but all have been closed with cops and concerned citizens enforcing distancing rules on anyone who can find a way to sneak onto a beach. Needless to say the surfers are going crazy and it is not going to be a happy scene this weekend when the weather is finally predicted to be sunny and relatively warm.

Meanwhile you have news reporters and various public officials warning the public to stay at home and watch TV for the latest virus news. While that might stop you from getting the virus, it sure won't stop you from getting fat.
