Where do you live? I have an an extra engine from my 08' ST that I would sell dirt cheap. It has a cracked crankcase, but everything else is in great shape. Or, if you plan to pull it apart to do repairs and need parts, I might be willing to pull off the parts you need and would sell them cheap. I was in a hurry to get it fixed before a huge trip, so I just put a whole motor in that I bought used from eBay.

Wow, that's a great offer. I'm just a little bit more than down the street from you.

I haven't have a chance to take a proper look at the engine yet but think most likely he let it run out of oil. He's one of those "I"ll fix it when it's broken" type of bikers.

There's about 75k Kms on her. He replaced the belt at about 60kms.

He's had it about 4 years. You can see from the photos it's lived outside and uncovered while he owned it, so it looks pretty unloved and weathered. But atleast it wasn't just used as a weekend toy to polish, it was his daily mode of transport.

I've charged the battery but it won't turn over. I put it in 3'rd gear and rocket it backward and the engine moved. I tried the starter button and the engine moved forward a small bit (the amount it had rotated backwards) and is locked up.

He was riding with headphones in, and said he could hear the engine getting noisy but drove on thinking he could get it home. At about 100kmh the bike locked up and ground to a halt. There's no oil showing on the dipstick.......

I'll remove the oil drain bolt and see if it's as suspected.....

Thanks Guido, I've been to a few similar madhouses, I'm sure this one is just as much fun....

Hi bud, I'm also in Dublin! If you need anything, just let me know (I'm no mechanic but have learned a few things about the F800). Also have the Motoscan GS 11 alternative if you need to 'talk' to the bike

    Thanks Alex, much appreciated.

I'm gonna pull the drain plug first and see if there is any oil.

But I probably will give you a shout soon enough to pick your brains.

Sorry about not updating in a while. I dropped the oil and all of 600ml came out. No bits of metal or any real burning smell but you don't always get that with an engine that's gone bang.

I was scouring the net for engines in the UK but it was near impossible to get an s/st engine. Only older engines that were just as weathered with damaged cases or broken studs for approx 700eur incl shipping, or 800R engines that would have different a gear ratios and a different output final drive.

So back about two months ago I spotted an
at engine in the Irish classifieds for €400. And it was black, so would be 2010 or newer. I got in touch and it's a 12/13 engine with 43k Kms but 2nd gear is gone. I haggled a little bit and we settled at €350 and he delivered it.

I exhaust stud is broken, one looks to have been drilled out but threads look intact.

    So, my next question....

Is it possible to access the gearbox from the bottom casing without a full traditional teardown? I'm hoping that is the case and I can use the black engine by replacing whatever it needs gearbox wise (hopefully from the '09 engine).

Has anyone does this or does anyone know of maybe a hidden/unaccessible bolt(s) that might stop me going that route.

    TIA, Chris
