    Dear forum
for many many years, i finally have got a BMW F 800 GT from 2013.
Preowned, all services done by BMW, fine conditions, 20.000 KM private sale
When I first look at it, the owner had some problems starting the bike, but after a short batt. charge, it started.
test drive no problem, and after the deal, i have driven it once, without any problem.
Now after a week, without any action, i was planning to take it for a drive this evening....but no joy.

Displays turns on, gear is neutral, but the display only clicks when the start button is activated.
Under the seat there is a small box, which I thougth was the dwa, no battery inside, and after this box have been reconnected, the is no lights in the display....
The fuel pump is working i can hear, but engine dosn't turn on....
I'm so sad right now, hope some one knows some one, who knows what to check ?

    BR
    Alex

Does it start when you pull the clutch (despite it is in neutral)? If so, the microswitch in the clutch lever is not working properly.
The earlier switch assemblies of the GT (both left and right) are of a bad quality. Mine have been replaced for free (known problem, no recall action). Contact a BMW dealer.

You have a 2013 model. It is perfectly normal for the battery to be bad by this time.

Yes, Battery replacement would be my call. If OE its done well to last 8 years, in fact could have been replaced at 4, & worn out again after another 4 years

When it was 6.5 years old my 2013 GT used to exhibit this behaviour. Only occasionally, but it was annoying when it happened. As others have said, a new battery is the answer.

Try to charge the battery. If it charges up ok try to see if the bike starts then check the battery voltage to see if the battery is being charged by the bike.
If the battery wont start the bike or wont charge, get and fit a new battery.
Then check too see that the bike is charging the new battery.

This brings up an interesting question for me - how long "should" a motorcycle battery last? On both my bikes, I have the batteries on a battery tender (Deltran) 100% of the time when they are not being ridden. I would think this would extend battery life, but maybe not?

The merits of using a Battery Tender (or equivalent) have been discussed many times on this forum. Based on 25+ years of using one on each of my bikes, I can count on a minimum of 8 years of battery life, and these are bikes that see very little use for 7-8 months of the year due to the awful weather around here. They really are cheap insurance against premature battery failure.

The original BMW-brand AGM battery in my 2009 F650GS only lasted 6 months until if failed without warning and left me stranded by the side of the road and needing a tow to my BMW dealer where the battery was replaced by a new one. The same thing happened to the same type of battery that came with my 2007 R1200R after 24 months. On the other hand, the original battery that came with my 1986 Honda VFR700FII lasted for 8 years until a blown VR took it out. The little lithium battery that I have in my Royal Enfield has also lasted for 8 years so far. However a Bike Master gel battery that I installed in my F650GS, gave up after only one year and was replaced with an expensive lithium battery, which is still starting the bike with gusto. Unfortunately, I am not sure if any good generalizations can be made about batteries nowadays. It really seems to be the luck of the draw.

So, to prevent "problems" on the road, maybe replace battery every 5-6 years, whether still "good" or not...?

I would say just keep an eye on your battery. Check the voltage now and then and see how well it is turning over the engine in the morning. If the voltage starts dropping unusually or the battery struggles to start the engine in the morning then it might be time to replace your battery.

i believe it's the original battery in my '13 - it's been on the tender since i bought it a year ago - i'm just gonna try and make it through this summer and go ahead and replace it next fall - 8 years is good enough for me -

    Dear all
New to this forum, not sure if there is a way to reply to all ?
First of all, thanks for all the posts, really appreciate it.
The battery was dead, not able to keep the voltage.
After a replacement battery have been installed, it runs with out any problems.
Have subsequently invested in a smart charger from CTEK.

    Once again thank you
