If you were considering getting the new Harley-Davidson Pan America adventure bike, it looks like there’s going to be a bit of a wait. According to a press posting on Harley-Davidson’s media site, CEO Jochen Zeitz said “having sold out of our 2021 allocation, we are excited about what the future has in store for Pan America and for the Adventure Touring category at Harley-Davidson.”

Nice to see there’s going to be a whole category of ADV machines from H-D, and Zeitz went on to say that “the Pan America Special [is] now the #1 selling ADV motorcycle model in North America.” It’s important to note that Zeitz said the Pan America Special is the best seller, which means the lower-tier base model (known simply as the Pan America 1250) may be available if you look hard enough.

Differences between the two? The Special features a semi-active system that automatically tailors the ride according to suspension position, speed, roll angle and rate, throttle movement and more, and it all gets changed up depending on which of the five ride modes you put it in – plus the Special adds two fully customizable ride modes as well (like one for sport touring, and one just for riding in mud, for example). There’s also TPMS as standard on the Special, and standard heated grips as well. Other Special standard farkles include a height adjustable rear brake pedal, centerstand, radiator brush guard, aluminum skid plate, and bar end hand guards/wind deflectors.

Good for Harley. Now to let the riders do their thing and find out how well it performs and it's longevity. We know BMW has had teething troubles with some models so Harley may experience the same.

I wonder how many will go straight into a storage unit as an "investment"?

One of the last choices I'd ever make, even tho I wish Harley no ill will....for all the reasons mentioned above I would not even consider one. So many good choices already in the market. Greg

Ya me too,,., If I had a bigger garage I could have two or three bikes in it that are new to the market, so I was quite surprised with this revelation?
    Maybe brand loyalty?

Perhaps H-D didn't make all that many Pan America models during the first wave of production just in case beta testers found something that might need a recall. And that is why they sold out so quickly.
    Richard - Current bikes: 2016 BMW R1200RS, 2018 16.6 kWh Zero S, 2011 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic, 2009 BMW F650GS, 2020 KTM 390 Duke, 2002 Yamaha FZ1 (FZS1000N) and a 1978 Honda Kick 'N Go Senior.

"Zeitz went on to say that “the Pan America Special [is] now the #1 selling ADV motorcycle model in North America.”"
Richard, they are saying pan American is #1 in sales,,,. Gotta be a play on words like R1250GS has a rally model, a GSA model and so on,,. Still seems unbelievable that this HD would be outselling the likes of GS,, LTM ,, Africa Twin, Tiger 900, Tenier 700 and so on?
T7 same with the New Tiger are relatively new model as well, when you go places you actually see these bikes with increasing regularity,,. Yet to to see the HD in the wild?

But is it true? That’s hard to say for certain, but we’ll try our best to find out.

Harley-Davidson sent out a press release making the bold claim that the Pan America 1250 Special is the best-selling adventure-touring motorcycle in North America. Unfortunately, the press release (included in full below) doesn’t provide any specific data to back up the claim.

Perhaps the Pan America is the best selling North American adventure bike in H-D's lineup.
