With the winter making it's way into the everyday lives of most of us, I thought it would be good to get a handle on what you folks find appealing to quench the thirst while relaxing by the fireside or down at your favorite drinking hole as you wait for spring to arrive.....

I actually wean my self off beer during fall/winter, and move into cognacs and wines.

I don't; However, the colder months may call for a change in variety. I tend for bolder flavors to go with the comfort foods taken during the colder months.....

Beer and ales are a mainstay in the land of hops. A nice Port wine with some local cheese is fine with me too. As it is, I'm sipping a cognac as it type...

Any suggestions on your favorites? You a white or a red wine drinker?

White wine, all the way. Won't touch red.

Here in Niagara region, we are blessed with wineries that specialize in white. Rieslings, Unoaked Chardonnay, Gewurtzaminer, Vidal.... all good choices. For a great Italian white and for special occasions, I like to treat myself to the Pinot Grigio from the Santa Margerita winery. Great stuff.

For cognacs, I like any XO type. House of Camus, Remy, Henessy. All good. Although I find the Camus smoothest, and easiest drinking. My mouth waters as I type. Once you try a good XO, its hard to go back to the lesser VSOP's.

Feel free to ship over a bottle or two of the good stuff. I'll taste it for you.

I agree that Italian Pinot Grigio is great stuff! I will tend to go for the reds myself...

Oregon and Washington have nothing to fear when it comes to wineries.....

My wife likes the Pinot GRigio, I'll stick the redder thicker grape squeezings. Too cold for beer in the winter. I do keep a jug of VSOP on hand!

A red wine if I'm sitting with SWMBO.

A dark ale if I'm having a pub meal.

A Bud if I'm hot and bothered.

JD & Ginger ale if I want to get pissed quickly.

If you want a laugh, ask your barmaid for a Guiness shandy.....

Being a physician who actually walks his talk-thin,wirey,non smoker ,health food and herbal nut, some spiritual direction-I drink only thick skinned long fermented Reds(pinots, cabs, shirez). They contain the highest levels of anti-oxidants.Besides,"after disclosure", I want to look my best for our new? visitors.

I like a deeper red wine. Lately wines from Argentina and Chile like Malbecs. For whites, a nice Sauvignon Blanc from NZ, For beers, been exploring the many Oktoberfest brews - though that wave has passed and the winter brews are next.

In the winter I enjoy a nice JD and water, a good Scotch straight or -in much colder weather - a B&B by the fire.

Hmm..seems like winter turns to drinking season as the cold, dark and snow turn us indoors.

A red with nibblies when relaxing, a white sometimes just for the hell of it, and Wild Turkey for the good times.

Mind you, I have got a 30 year old bottle of 140 proof Vodka, that an old German lady gave me recently. I had a sip and it's like rocket fuel.

You have one of the finest breweries in the southern hemisphere on your doorstep in Freemantle & you drink wine & Scotch?!?

You are absolutely right mate, but after hammering the local breweries for ten years I thought it was time for a change, you know give them a little time to recover and hit the wineries instead (for a while).

Gotta love a nice New Zealand or Australian lager. Now I don't want to offend my northern hemisphere brothers but shit you guys need to realize that you don't need to make beer that has the viscosity of diff oil!!!!
I have a good friend who is a pom and he insists on regularly plying me with some bloody slop which tastes like vegemite with a head!!Guiness?...Kilkenny? what the fuck is that about??
After drinking that shit my arse burns for a week!
You guys do know that beer should be consumed without an involuntary gagging reaction necessitating spewing out aforementioned black, vile diesel like substance at the nearest poor bastard close to you (all-though the chances of someone being anywhere remotely close to you is highly unlikely, as if you are drinking this stuff, you are about as popular as a muslim..in ummmm ... in ummm... well about as popular as a muslim anywhere really.)I await your considered, adult, responses

Was about to pick up some pricey bourbon today & then on a whim chose Bulleit for a free tumbler give-away (such stuff as I usually despise). It's not bad. http://www.bulleitbourbon.com/

Bulleit made a fine birthday gift from a friend until the bottle got empty. Then it was another useless glass container.

Elijah Craig is a another good but inexpensive bourbon. If you want to try a Rye try Van Winkle http://www.internetwines.com/pa56374.html
