Daniel Day Lewis has had some great roles in great movies. My Left Foot. In the Name of the Father.

I stumbled on this motorcycling related movie last week. I was pleasantly surprised and give it a thumbs up!

I rented it several months I think.
He buys a Norton Commando if I recall, is that correct?
I also really liked it. A lot of us ride for some of the same reasons he did.

Another great motorcycle film is "The World's Fastest Indian" starring Anthony Hopkins".

One of the worst remakes every IMHO was "True Grit". John Wayne did it much much better.

Right-O on "One Week". I agree that there was only one John Wayne, but the "True Grit" remake is very good as well. Jeff Bridges is awesome. Have you seen "The Big Lebowski"? One of the better movies about bowling...

I liked the new version myself. I did not care for Glen Cambell's acting.... As a side note....John Wayne's "True Grit" was filmed in and around the Ouray, Colorado area. The courthouse scene was the actual court house that still sits in Ouray and is in use today. The snake pit scene was filmed just outside of town up toward Yankee Boy Basin. And the early town scenes were in Ridgeway about ten miles north of Ouray. My Dad's cousin can be seen in the background a few times dresses up as a Preacher.

The shootout scenes were on or near the Last Dollar road heading toward Telluride.

That million Dollah highway area is a really nice ride and berry, berry scenic. I've rode in the worst gully washer down pour from Telluride to Ridgeway a couple years ago. Almost epic.

Many years ago I went to a motorcycle rally in Estes Park during the first week of September. Great location. When I left I road up up up through the Rocky Mountain National Park. At the top you can look DOWN on a glaciar. Beautiful. I preceeded down to the million dollar highway on my way to Durango. It had been raining pretty good all morning and by afternoon it had turned into more of a downpour. By 4 o’clock I was tired, cold, and figured that I was on vacation so why not just stop early for once. Down the mountain I spotted this little town called Silverton so I turned off, rode down the mountain and got a motel. It’s an interesting place. Had a wonderful dinner in an old west type bar and by then the rain had stopped so I had a good chance to wonder around some. None of the streets are paved. I think it is due to the fact that the winters are so sever that pavement just breaks up in the spring anyway. I had parked my bike right in front of my motel room window so when I woke up in the morning naturally the first thing I did was to dash over and look out to make sure the bike was ok. It was fine and it was a nice sunny day but my mouth dropped open when I looked back up the mountain….it was all white…what the hell? After jumping into my clothes and having a quick breakfast I rode back up to the highway. It had almost disappeared. The rain had turned to snow overnight and there was about 2 inches on the highway. For those of you that have never traveled this route before I’ll tell you what the million dollar highway is like. It is cut into the sides of mountains, on one side is sheer cliff, on the other is those 2 foot high metal barriers perfect for slicing, dicing, and chopping. One inch past the barrier is another sheer cliff. There are places where the drop off is thousands of feet. Go over here and no one is even going to try to find you much less locate your remains. It certainly is beautiful, I would recommend this ride to anyone…but not in the snow. Going about 20 MPH I slid, skidded, and spun my way finally to Durango. That 50 miles took hours that seemed like days and was the scariest ride of my life.

Back when my FIAT 850 Spider was new, I was riding along on the Red Mountain Pass coming back From Silverton. The sun was out and not a cloud in the sky so I had the top down and was enjoying the ride. Literally out of the blue, I was in a gully washer of a rain storm with the sun still out and blue sky. The winds on the mountain top were blowing the rain from a thunderstorm on the other side of the mountain and on top of me....

Just watched The Hobbit (2D and I think 24 fpr).

    It's RUBBISH!!!

Everytime the camera pans it just gets blurred. I though it was me (I can't see 3D films with my squint), but my son said the same and he has 20/20 vision.

Sorry Mr Jackson I will not waste my money on parts 2 and 3.

Oh and it's llllooooonnnnnggggg and bbbboooorrrriiiiinnnngggggg

Just my 1.88c worth at today's exchange rate.

The Hobbit, as I read, was shot at the new CGI 29 fps, which made it blurry. It was also rated 2.5 stars of 5. Yech!

I thought it was in 48fps and has to have projection at the same. Not all theaters have the capability....

From my understanding it was shot at 48fps 3D but as not all cinemas have the capability (equipment) to project it as such then the alternative is 24fps 2D. This latter frame rate is what is frequently termed 'the classical cinema frame rate' and is more akin to the European TV 25fps (PAL) unlike the USA (NSTC) which I believe is 60fps.

My favourite fillum is Steve Martin's 'LA Story'. No motorcycles at all in that though.

My fave motorcycling fillum is 'The World's Fastest Indian' closely followed by the Guy Martin TT one and 'On Any Sunday'.

    Cheers

48Hz is not 48 fps, but it does not matter. Video is awful, I'll see it on Blu Ray maybe. By then it should get cleaned up!

I think the Guy Martin film you are referring to is "TT3D: Closer to the Edge". I've not seen this movie but would like to. My Google search turns up Blue Ray DVD formatted for the UK, but not for the USA. Does anybody know if modern DVD players will play this for me stateside?

    Sorry Mark don't know.

In NZ all DVD players have region coding disabled as the industry was not 100% sure region coding was legal here

Same here in Australia, Mark. We have the DVD but not the 3D version. The Region is stated as 2 PAL.

Happy to send it over for you to try if you like

Maybe it would be easier asking the supplier Duke Video (http://www.dukevideo.com/prd8888DBR/...Edge-BluRay-3D ) whether it comes in any other format?

They are currently having a special on both the DVD and the 3D Blu-ray versions plus free standard shipping worldwide.

Good on you Devon. Duke got right back to me. They haven't produced the video formatted for Region 1, but will consider it given the success of the documentary in Europe.

I watched "Everest" last night. 45 minutes. The usual mountain climber saga, except they carried an Imax camera to the top of the mountain. The photography was exceptional, worth the time to watch.

We watched a Cohen brothers movie recently called "Inside LLewyn Davis". It is based on the folk music scene in New York in the early 60's just before Dylan came on the scene. This is a fictional movie mostly. One recurring scene based on an event in Dave van Ronk's life actually happened. The movie is not based on van Ronk however.

Speaking of New York Folk Music, I'm reminded of a recent movie I found on Netflix streaming: "The History of Future Folk". FutureFolk.com. Its pretty good 1950's style science fiction. Plus the songs are not lip-synced.

We watched a Michael Caine movie called "The Statement". It is loosely based on a true story about Vichy France's collaboration with the Nazis in WW2. we watched on a Netflix disc. We could not stream it on Netflix.

Glad to see "The Station Agent" made it, likewise "One Week" . Only one reference to Kurosawa?? Is everyone out there a product of the American educational system? Wait, hold on, that includes me, scratch that. Skip over Seven Samurai, go right to Ran and Rashomon. Geez, I almost forgot, Les Miserables (Liam Neeson before they tried turning him into an action star), and Rent.
How much do you need before you have enough?
