[QUOTE=Roadpizza;605062]even Lucy..( the African one, not the TV one)

Hasn't Lucy been shown to be ...rather dubious? Google "Lucy anthropological fraud" and you will find a lot of proofs that are indisputable and other simple arguments that demand reason.

On the other points Phil, I would honestly want to be able to respond to credible challenges, but first I want to validate the points I might investigate. Can you show a sufficient degree of credibility whereas your sources are above reproach, especially on the specifics of a challenge?
You will find piles and piles of 3rd party research throughout history, validating what the Holy Bible contends to be Truth. Modern science continues this exact proof.
Them's seeking to prove it wrong, and dedicate themselves to find the errors, become enlightened & find the Truth of It and give themselves to It.
By the standard of old Jewish history, someone contending to be a prophet of God, a speaker of the Truth, who makes one wrong play is found to be a false prophet and meets with a sudden death....once and only once is all it takes to invalidate the substantive value of it. Righteousness is never wrong. That you can stand on and base a life on. Everything else is "Dust in the wind".

I think a better solution would be for you to take time and study other religions from creditable sources ( Not through the single lens of your brand of Christianity). Do the work yourself and do yourself a favor.

Neurotheology? I'll do a bit of studying on it. Thanks.

Travel( In this case, insert study) is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

You really seem to have a big problem with this Philip. I wouldn't dream of claiming that people who don't agree with my belief system are destined to eternal conscious torment in the flames of hell. I'm not sure I even subscribe to that interpretation of the alternative to heaven anyway. But as I've said on a number of occasions above, I definitely don't think that only people who sign up as Christians have any chance of going to heaven.

I suspect you have a real problem with those who show a smug self-satisfaction in believing that they have a ticket to heaven because they have joined the right club. I can understand that. And I too dislike that - it smacks of a complete lack of humility. It was the smug religious types that Jesus had the most criticism of.

If I come across as smug, if I seem to suggest that I'm now enjoying the "cool of the day" on easy street, if in any way I'm seem to present anything other than an invitation to the peace of the Truth in an attractive way - then I am missing the mark (actual definition of sin..."miss the mark" as in archery).

I am not supposed to "win" anyone to the Truth, only tell others about it. It is the Holy Spirit's job to do the heavy lifting.

Pete, Rev 20:12-15: "And I saw the dead, small & great standing before God, and the books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death & Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each according to his works. Then Death & Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire."

That part is scripturally clear. Getting one's name written in the Book of Life is the key, Biblically speaking. However, I see how perhaps an ultra rigid bent on uttering a certain set of words doesn't represent God's providence.

It seems a person's spirit appears to become clear if their attitude is one of - "that simple path doesn't suit me." or "any way accomplishes the same objective". Forget the movie, but I seem to recall a story of a tough John Wayne type who wouldn't go to the doctors, cause he didn't want to get the diagnosis he feared. That's denial. Tragically illogical.

If you can stand the pastey, whiny, striney, Jewish presenter... John Safran's 8 part series might amuse &/or shock?
Most of the series is serialised on YouTube...
You have to give the man some kudos for the situations he put himself through... some of which included...
    undergoing an exorcism! (pretty disturbing)
placing a voodoo curse on an ex-girlfriend!!
getting a curse lifted from the Australian Soccer Team!
Here's a tame but fairly amusing taster...

I've recently started reading, "The Jesus Legend: A Case for the Historical Reliability of the Synoptic Jesus Tradition" by Paul Rhodes Eddy and Greg Boyd. To cut a long story short it's an academic theological text which sets out to show that it's perfectly reasonable to accept that the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) are reliable historical documents. (Or did I already tell you that?)

Looks like exactly the sort of view that the Eddy/Boyd book is refuting. They deal with the suggestion that Christianity borrowed ideas from the surrounding cultures.

According to Amazon it's not been released in the UK yet. Have you read it? Can you give a brief synopsis?

I must admit I tend to think that a lot of what physicists say about the very beginning of everything (first nanoseconds of the big bang) comes across more like philosophy than science (e.g. parallel universes).

Indeed. It's theoretical science. There is no proof of too much of it, only indications.
But I think it's a lot more valid that the "man in the sky with a beard" hokum.

The only indication of parallel universes is the improbability of the universe as we know existing at all. There are several fundamental constants in physics, such as the gravitational constant, Rydberg constant, nuclear weak forces constant etc. For several of these if they were different from their actual values by an infinitessimally small amount then the universe would not support the existence of life. For example, if the gravitational constant were slightly smaller than it actually is by a miniscule amount, everything would have flown apart and never coalesced into stars, galaxies and planets. If it were the tiniest amount larger, everything would have collapsed into itself and not formed stars, galaxies and planets. This same consideration applies to several, if not all of these fundamental constants. The probability of all of these constants being exactly the right value to support life is so infinitessimally small, that it seems people are speculating an infinite number of parallel universes to make it more plausible that one exists with the right conditions.

The alternative hypothesis, that it was designed that way, is seen as so uncool, that some people will speculate all sorts of improbable alternatives to avoid having to accept it.

Well, if you think that, maybe you shouldn't believe in parallel universes, then. Or trying to pitch them off on others.

The entire concept of religion is captured very well in the movie "The Invention of Lying"

While there must be more to the big picture than we can see or know, thinking any human has ever had the inside scoop is only slightly more entertaining than the dancing baby.

I read that and also watched the video on Youtube of his lecture about the book. I must admit I've not got my head around negative energy. Even if it is true, you need mass to create gravity to create negative energy to allow the total energy in the universe to remain zero whilst creating something from nothing so as not to break the law of conservation of energy. And to make this happen you borrow mass from the future to allow it to happen and then pay it back again later. Do you get this?

I don't know that there is really anything to "get" from it. It's all theory, for the most part, basically. Trying to guess or surmise, based on what we know, about what it's all about.
For instance, the law of conservation of energy. That may, and nota bene that I say may, be something that applies only in our world/universe/sphere of knowledge.
It may not apply on that other side. Remember the Bizarro world. I know nothing about that, other than that things there are in some type of "opposite".

This guy pokes fun a people who believe in God and claims we no longer need a god to understand the origins of the universe, but then rather stretches credulity in trying to justify that contention.

Not sure what you mean by 'that other side' David. Is this parallel universes again?

I can't answer explanations for your poking fun at someone who doesn't believe like you do. You have to explain that one.

You are all hung up on this stuff. I could care less. It don't matter to me. Sunday to me is a good day to
    1. Ride my bicycle to the beach, or
    2. Go for a motorcycle ride, or
    3. Do motorcycle maintenance, or
    D. Adjust the valves on my car, or
Help a buddy do maintenance on his motorcycle, etc., ad infinitum.
Where the universe came from, where it's going to why all that is, etc., is of no concern to me. Why would it be? Ain't nothing I can do about it.
It reminds me of the clamor about that particle accelerator in Switzerland/France they were going to start up. Maybe a lawsuit.
It could cause a chain reaction and end the universe. Do I care?
What Tom Bodett said about it was "that would solve more problems than it would create." It would.

I guess the other thing Pete, is that ... well ... I really don't know where you been. (England?)
You scoff at the idea of the parallel universe, and don't even know that not only does it exist, but that we are a part of it.

This seems to be getting back to the philosphical side of life again. Where are hard proofs that can be tested emperically? Hard science seems to be validating Bibical points.

DC, if what the Bible contends is true, you are missing the point of your life - a past loss,
missing a degree of peace and joy - a present loss,
& the eternal ramifications are astronomical.
I would only hope that you would risk the potential for gaining a new awareness that turns everything you have ever understood about the big picture to be true on its head. Courage, intellectual honesty, and diligence is what it takes. If you honestly look, you will find a new truth that will captivate your intellectual imagination. It's when the game finally starts for us.

I know "blah, blah, blah, Jesus"...take a look.

Ah, thanks Glenn. I actually have a life. My own life. And it's really quite enjoyable, in spite of all the bad stuff in this world.
But it's a great offer, to have someone else, or something else impose their stuff on me, I guess.

    But no thanks.
Who was it what said "I gotta be me"?

DC I understand. I never meant to suggest that you don't have a robust enjoyable life.

It's just that you don't know what you don't know...and folks like Pete & others reckon a loving effort to gently point out - not just a better thing...what some might suggest is the only thing once they get over the firewall.

does anyone here have read "faust", one of the many faust of the world literature... the ones I prefer are "faust" by goethe and "doktor faustus" by mann, but also "the master and margarita" by bulgakov is noticeable... sorry, but faust's way is the only way, human way, I can understand to reach al different, maybe deeper (maybe not), kind of truth, but until I decide it's not time to play such hard game with my mind, in someway, I agree with david...

I actually have a life. My own life. And it's really quite enjoyable, in spite of all the bad stuff in this world.
    it's the same for me.

I understand too. But on the contrary, I do know what I don't know. Basically everything. I think it's you guys who think you know what I think you don't know, but just believe on faith.
You may think you know that there is something in my life or for my life that I am 'missing'. Or need, or don't have. Some essential thing. I think I know there is no such thing.
Other than maybe a Maserati GT with snakeskin upholstery. But I hope nobody thinks that I think that is essential for me.

I just enjoyed watching Jesus Christ Superstar.

    Should I be worried?

Am I loosing my faith in no faith?

    Am I confused?

Could I be turning into an agnostic?

Why does the song "I Don't Know How To Love Him" make me cry?

Well it wasn't written by a Chritian to promote the Christian message. In fact, I believe Tim Rice wrote the words, and said he was fascinated by Judas - he seems to be a central character in it. I think you're safe after watching it, unless... well you never can tell when a flash of inspiration might take you and you 'see the light'.

because it's music! not for the words, it's just the sound... and the sound sometimes reaches the most recondite places of our mind.
