Please do stay in touch and tell us how the 1200 does on dirt roads. It should be quite an Adventure.

john! welcome in the "betrayers' club"!
the K1200S is a wonderful bike and I'm sure you will not regret the F800GS... but on dirt roads... read my thread on he K1300S... notacop is right! it's an adventure: between mud and stones this bike shows its limit!

What a bike ,its sooooooooooooooo fast and for a big'un is nimbel ,and high 40's MPG.
I've added a few bits ,Led rear light and indicators ,sat nav , tank bag and panniers ,fender extender ,top clamp protector, charger lead ,loud horn ,Lazer pipe,R&G bar ends and lead for heated jacket.
I think this is my best bike (my 46th).

Since I consider the 1300S to be my next Bimmer....why do you prefer the 12?
I rode a 1300S a few summers ago on a demo ride and I felt at home instantly...maybe not with full throttle...at least not for long

Edit: Sorry must have been tired...for some reason I read that you preferred the 12....need caffeine!
