Gear indicator failure and fix.

On a ride last Sunday, the gear indicator started to read incorrectly. It would either show the same number no matter which gear I was in, or it would start flashing different numbers when I was in the same gear. Sometimes it would not show any number. This problem got worse as the bike got hot.

I took it to the dealer on Tuesday, and the found a loose connection to the gear potentiometer. Seems fine now. I'll take it out this weekend and give it a good test run.

Mine started doing the very same yesterday. It got steadily worse by the time I got to work this morning, telling me I'm in 3rd when I know I'm in 1st .. and no chance of getting it to agree that I'm in neutral.
Is it as easy to fix as wobbling a wire, or should it go in for professional wire wobble?

I have had the same problem , the sensor was actually changed for me. It got so bad that the bike would not start because it didn't know it was in neutral, try the clutch if that happens to you.
Also you could find the connector for the wire out of the sensor (I think the sensor is behind a plate behind the pulley cover) , it has been reported that the connector comes loose and needs re-seating.

It seems like once a year I have to pull mine, spray it with electrical cleaner, and reinsert it. Works like a charm for about a year...

Just got a notification that this thread had some activity in it. I see it's the first time in a decade. I wrote the first version of this fix back in 2007, and it then got refined with photos by Andrew Avboden in 2008: https://f800riders.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36101

Incidentally, I am still riding the same 2007 F800ST. Here's a link to my tweet from yesterday's SMR:

In the 14 years since I pushed my gear-indicator sensor up into place, I have never needed to do it again!

This forum is a wonderful resource. Back in the day I used to spend a lot of time here. Greetings and safe rides to all!

Cheers,
Andreas
